Some time ago, Stellantis changed its strategy towards China with the acquisition of 21% of the capital of Leapmotor and the announcement of the creation of a subsidiary to export the models of this young Chinese manufacturer, a joint venture majority owned by Stellantis. Today, the Group announces the sale of two Leapmotor models in Europe from next September, with a view to selling them throughout the world.
A new chapter in the history of the automobile is opening with the creation of Leapmotor International B.V., the joint venture resulting from the alliance between Stellantis, a global giant in the sector, and Leapmotor, one of the main manufacturers of electric vehicles in China. This strategic collaboration, announced today, aims to conquer global markets with cutting-edge electric models in response to the climate emergency and growing consumer expectations for sustainable mobility.
"The creation of Leapmotor International is an important milestone in addressing the global climate emergency," said Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis. "Thanks to our international presence, we will soon be able to offer our customers competitive and technologically advanced electric vehicles that meet their expectations."
Leapmotor International will draw on Leapmotor's cutting-edge technologies and Stellantis' international distribution network to offer a range of accessible and efficient electric vehicles. The joint venture plans to launch two flagship models in the European, Indian, Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Africa and South American markets from the fourth quarter of 2024: the T03, a compact and dynamic city car, and the C10, a spacious family SUV.
"The partnership between Leapmotor and Stellantis demonstrates a high level of efficiency and opens a new chapter in the global integration of China's intelligent electric vehicle industry," said Zhu Jiangming, founder, chairman and CEO of Leapmotor, continuing, "We believe this cooperation can bring a new dimension to Leapmotor to become a world-class company in the field of intelligent electric vehicles."
Leapmotor International's ambitious roll-out builds on Stellantis' established distribution network to ensure an immediate presence in Europe. By the end of 2024, 200 dedicated points of sale, including Stellantis & You sites, will be operational in nine European countries (France, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Greece and Romania), with a target of 500 points of sale by 2026. Coverage will then be extended to the Middle East & Africa, India & Asia Pacific and South America regions by the end of 2024.
The partnership between Stellantis and Leapmotor represents a major step in the transition to sustainable mobility. By joining forces, these two industry leaders have the potential to democratise access to electric vehicles and contribute to a greener future for all.
"With Leapmotor's cutting-edge products and technologies, and the support of Stellantis' networks and marketing services, we are confident that consumers around the world will be able to enjoy the exceptional driving and riding experience. "with Leapmotor products," concluded Zhu Jiangming.
Stellantis is therefore not slow in exporting the Leapmotor models, which will arrive in Europe in September before conquering the world by the end of the year. The group also announces its product plan, which includes four new models in addition to the existing two, including two SUVs. The arrival of Leepmotor, combined with the strength of the Stellantis network, will therefore enable the Group to maximise its sales of electric cars, but will also expose its historic brands to strong internal competition from this new brand.
