Success of the Citroën C5 Aircross, the leading plug-in hybrid in France

It's a fact: the C5 Aircross is experiencing a real resurgence in 2023, thanks to a very successful restyling but also to a much improved situation on the front in terms of component shortages compared to 2022. With 6,655 units sold during the quarter, Citroën's large SUV saw its sales increase by 104.58%, putting it in 16th place in terms of sales in France, a success also driven by its hybrid version, which will shine in the first quarter of 2023.

The C5 Aircross Hybrid had taken the lead in sales of plug-in hybrids in February, a position it maintained in March, when it largely dominated its segment. In March, 1,489 C5 Aircross plug-in hybrids were registered, an increase of 626% (!), ahead of the Peugeot 3008 in second place with 1,099 units, followed by the Peugeot 308 with 753 units. The C5 Aircross therefore holds 9.47% of the plug-in hybrid market, whose sales increased by 34.1% to 15,722 units, giving it 8.6% of the French car market in March.

With its leading position in February and March, the C5 Aircross is therefore logically the sales leader in the first quarter of 2023 with 2,655 units. The Citroën SUV is ahead of the Peugeot 3008 (2,195 units), then the DS 7 Crossback (1,751 units), i.e. a top 3 of plug-in hybrids entirely owned by the Stellantis brands in France in the first quarter. With 2,655 units sold, the Citroën C5 Aircross is well ahead of the market, which reached 36,516 units, or 8.7% of the total passenger car market.

The plug-in hybrid version of the C5 Aircross represents 39.89% of sales of the brand's large SUV, a figure that should increase with the arrival of the 180 hybrid version. This share is also much higher than that of the Peugeot 3008, as the hybrid version represents only 23% of sales of the Lion SUV.

The C5 Aircross is undoubtedly a success for Citroën and its hybrid version proves this by taking the lead in sales for the first time on the plug-in hybrid market. This excellent performance, which should be underlined, should increase with the rechargeable hybrid offer, which has doubled since the 180 version, which should allow, in the very short term, a majority of sales obtained on these PHEV engines, the first not towards total electrification.
