[Review] Citroën makes progress in Europe in the first half of the year

After a difficult year in 2023, the first half of 2024 allowed Citroën to bounce back with sales up 13.8% (EU, EFTA, UK) to 223,382 units, giving the brand a market share of 3.2%, surpassing that of Fiat and returning to the footsteps of Opel. Nevertheless, here is a model-by-model report of the brand's sales for the first five months of the year, the figures for July were not available at the time of writing.

C3 :

With sales up 51% to 84,739 units, the third-generation Citroën C3 ends its career on a high note, largely making up for the losses suffered in 2023, when sales fell by 10%. As recently as May, the C3 ranked 9th in sales on the European market, less than 200 units from the Opel Corsa and Peugeot 208, which shows the performance of the versatile herringbone sedan even as its career continues. career.

The C3 is by far the brand's best-seller, accounting for almost 38% of sales in the first five months of the year, which means that the brand must successfully launch the fourth generation.

C3 Aircross :

After almost stable sales in 2022 (-1%), the Citroën C3 Aircross recovered in the first five months of the year with an increase of 11% to 30,999 units. However, it still sells 2 to 2.5 times less than its two French rivals, so there is plenty of room for improvement for its replacement, which will arrive at European dealerships by the end of the year and will allow the brand to enter a new phase of growth in 2025.

C4-C4X :

After a drop of 9% in 2022, the Citroën C4 is also recovering at the start of the year with sales up 4% to 27,396 units, to which must be added those of the C4 % to 4,642 units. In total, the C4-C4X duo has sold more than 32,000 units on the European market in the first five months of the year, a good performance compared to the Peugeot 308 and Opel Astra, which have sold 43,000 and 36,000 units respectively. The current generation C4 is therefore very close to its rivals from Stellantis, while the previous generation was clearly below, the 308 and Astra are paying for the decline in the compact sedan market if the C4 manages to resist.

C5 Aircross:

The large SUV from the herringbone brand is in its last full year of marketing in 2024, it suffers the blow at the beginning of the year with a drop of 20% in its sales, which must be compared to the increase of 71% known in 2022, the decline is therefore logical. With just over 20,000 units, it follows in the footsteps of the Opel Grandland, while the Renault Austral and Peugeot 3008 are ahead with 32,248 and 37,909 units respectively.

C5X:

The brand's large saloon is in trouble at the start of the year with sales down 78% to just 1,527 units. The C5X is not in an easy market, with large sedans facing strong competition from C-segment SUVs. However, the arrival of the MHEV hybrid engine on the C5X could allow it to recover in the coming months.

In conclusion, Thierry Koskas has set a target of 5% market share (VP + LCV) in Europe by 2025, and the brand can count on the new C3 and C3 Aircross to achieve this ambitious goal. In any case, the first half of the year ended with a share of 3.2%, excluding LCVs, which puts Citroën on a good track to achieve its goal.
