DS N°7: a strategic rebirth for the icon of French luxury
The wait is finally over for automotive industry observers and French brand enthusiasts. Following weeks of speculation and image leaks that surfaced last month, DS Automobiles has officially unveiled the new DS N°7. This model is not a mere evolution but a complete replacement for the DS 7, the brand's first true commercial success and image-setter since its independence in June 2014. In line with the lineup renewal initiated by the DS N°8 flagship, this new compact SUV is tasked with revitalizing sales volumes, which have seen a significant decline in recent years. To meet this challenge, DS has invested heavily in turning its bestseller into a genuine premium SUV capable of standing up to established German rivals.
An exterior design sculpted for efficiency and presence
The styling of the DS N°7 demonstrates clear aesthetic maturity. For this new generation, DS designers drew heavy inspiration from the DS AERO SPORT LOUNGE concept car, seeking the perfect balance between a stately presence and cutting-edge aerodynamics. At the front, the DS N°7 adopts the brand's new lighting signature, shared with the DS N°8. The DS LIGHT BLADE, with its characteristic V-shape, frames an illuminated grille called DS LUMINASCREEN, making the vehicle instantly recognizable day and night.
The silhouette is more dynamic, featuring a flat hood and a slightly tapered roofline that extends into a rear spoiler. This meticulous work allows the DS N°7 to achieve a drag coefficient (Cx) of 0.26, a benchmark value for an SUV of this size. Beyond aesthetics, this figure is crucial for maximizing the range of electric versions. Dimensions have also increased to follow market trends: the vehicle grows by 7 cm in length to reach 4.66 meters, while the wheelbase is extended by 5 cm to 2.79 meters. This gain directly benefits interior space and overall architecture.
The profile is energized by large 740 mm diameter wheels, with rims available up to 21 inches. Significant attention was paid to the glass area: it increases by 30% for the rear doors, improving brightness for passengers, while the optional panoramic roof grows by 40%. For personalization, DS offers six refined colors, including the new Silk Green, alongside Palladium Grey, Topaz Blue, Alabaster White, Crystal Pearl, and Perla Nera Black. Dual-tone body options, featuring a Deep Black roof extending onto the hood, highlight the model's exclusivity.
A high-fashion interior: the refinement of five DS universes
Inside, the DS N°7 reinterprets French luxury codes by adopting the dashboard and seats introduced by the DS N°8. The space has been optimized to offer "First Class" comfort. Trunk volume is a major asset, offering up to 560 liters depending on the version, with a two-position floor allowing for a flat surface once the 40/20/40 bench is folded.
The craftsmanship applied to materials is unprecedented in this segment. DS offers five distinct interior atmospheres:
Black Basalt DS Canvas Universe: A tribute to straw marquetry with "Graphic Black" surfaces playing on matte and gloss contrasts.
Pearl Grey and Eternal Blue DS Canvas Universe: A serene and bright atmosphere with an iridescent pearly effect on textiles.
Eternal Blue Alcantara Universe: A sporty and elegant interpretation of the famous textile, paired with brushed aluminum.
Nappa Leather Universe (Celestial Grey or Black Basalt): The pinnacle of craftsmanship with the famous "watchstrap" design on the seats, extending to the door panels and dashboard.
Byzantine Black Nappa Leather Universe: Exclusive to the LA PREMIÈRE launch collection, this interior features a dark aubergine hue, Pearl Point stitching, and engine-turned aluminum accents inspired by Art Deco.
Onboard technology: an intuitive and secure experience
The DS N°7 is a true technological showcase. The heart of the cabin is the DS IRIS SYSTEM 2.0, a fluid human-machine interface that functions like a smartphone on a 16-inch touchscreen. This system now integrates ChatGPT for natural voice recognition, allowing for real conversations with the vehicle. To complete this experience, the FOCAL ELECTRA® 3D Hi-Fi system features 14 speakers and 690 W of power for total sonic immersion.
In terms of driving aids, DS offers equipment often reserved for higher segments:
DS PIXELVISION: Intelligent adaptive lights with a 520-meter range in boost mode.
DS NIGHT VISION: An infrared camera capable of detecting pedestrians and animals up to 300 meters in total darkness.
DS DRIVE ASSIST 2.0: A Level 2 semi-autonomous driving system including semi-automatic lane changes and predictive speed adaptation.
DS ACTIVE SCAN SUSPENSION: A camera analyzes the road in real-time to adjust the firmness of each shock absorber independently, ensuring exceptional ride comfort.
Powertrains: The E-TENSE electric offensive and hybrid choice
The DS N°7 is based on the STLA Medium multi-energy platform, allowing for a varied range. Unlike the DS N°8, the DS N°7 retains an electrified combustion engine for its entry-level: the 145 hp HYBRID unit. This powertrain combines a 1.2-liter turbo engine with a 28 hp electric motor integrated into the dual-clutch automatic transmission. It effectively replaces the old 130 hp 1.5 BlueHDi, allowing for up to 50% electric driving in urban areas with CO2 emissions kept at 121 g/km.
The 100% electric offering is available in three power levels:
230 hp E-TENSE: Front-wheel drive (FWD) with a 73.7 kWh battery, offering a 543 km (337 miles) WLTP range.
245 hp E-TENSE Long Range: Equipped with a 97.2 kWh battery produced in France by ACC, it boasts a record 740 km (460 miles) WLTP range, including over 450 km at highway speeds.
350 hp AWD Long Range E-TENSE: Two electric motors for all-wheel drive, enabling 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds with a 679 km (422 miles) range.
Charging is equally impressive with 160 kW DC fast charging, allowing for 190 km of range recovery in 10 minutes. The 20% to 80% charge is achieved in 27 minutes. The vehicle also features V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) functionality, allowing users to plug 230 V external devices directly into the car's battery.
European manufacturing and global ambitions
The environmental focus of the DS N°7 goes beyond its engines. Production is rooted in Europe: Long Range batteries are made in Northern France (Billy-Berclau), electric motors in Eastern France, and final assembly takes place in Melfi, Italy. Sustainable materials are used extensively, with 68% recycled Alcantara and olive-leaf tanned leathers, a biodegradable and non-toxic method.
Commercially, DS is initially targeting fleets with an eco-scored Ligne Business finish before opening the range to private buyers. Orders begin this Tuesday, March 17, in France with the 230 hp FWD ÉTOILE Ligne Business version priced at €64,200.
Conclusion: a major stakes for DS Automobiles
With the new DS N°7, DS Automobiles continues its transformation into a purely premium and electrified brand. The replacement of the DS 7 is a critical moment: this new model must stabilize the brand's market share while attracting a new clientele to luxury electric vehicles. While the DS N°7 seems well-armed in terms of style, comfort, and range, it will face fierce German competition. The technological gap, particularly regarding electric architecture (400-volt system here vs. 800-volt for some rivals) or multimedia system speed, will be closely scrutinized by buyers. Regardless, this "First Class" SUV brilliantly embodies the French Art of Travel.
