Citroën C3: best-selling electric car in France in May

The Citroën C3 in blue

Over a century ago, André Citroën envisioned making automobiles accessible to everyone, thereby democratizing mobility. Today, with the new ë-C3, the brand with the double chevrons continues this historical legacy by aiming to democratize electric vehicles. The results from May in France confirm that this strategic direction is indeed the right one. The ë-C3 finished the month at the top of electric car sales, propelling Citroën to second place in this booming market segment. This initial success is an encouraging sign for the future of electric mobility and for Citroën's position in this evolving market.

The ë-C3, spearheading the electric transition in France

May proved to be a particularly fruitful month for the Citroën ë-C3, which emerged as the best-selling electric car in France across all passenger vehicle (PV) channels. This marks the second time since the beginning of the year that the ë-C3 has taken the lead in private sales, underscoring the growing appeal of this affordable electric mobility proposition. This exceptional performance had a direct impact on Citroën's position in the overall electric vehicle market, with the brand reaching second place and volumes multiplied by five compared to May 2024. This momentum is supported by a 13% increase in registrations compared to April 2025, confirming an upward growth curve. As Édouard George, Director of Citroën France, emphasizes: "The arrival of the ë-C3 marks a turning point in Citroën's history and in access to electric mobility for all. This success demonstrates that there is a real demand for an electric car that is both affordable, made in Europe, and designed for daily use. Seeing the ë-C3 become the best-selling electric car in France in May is a source of immense pride for the Citroën teams. We will continue to accelerate to offer even more accessible solutions, without compromise on style, comfort, and innovation." This statement reaffirms the brand's commitment to making electric mobility accessible, without sacrificing Citroën's fundamental values: style, comfort, and innovation. Since the beginning of the year, the performance of the C3, across all powertrains, has also significantly contributed to the 67,867 PV/LCV registrations accumulated by Citroën, elevating the brand to second place in the 100% electric passenger vehicle market for private customers.

A dynamic Citroën range beyond the ë-C3

While the ë-C3 was undeniably the driving force behind Citroën's sales in May, the brand's performance extends beyond this single model. The entire range contributed to Citroën's robust commercial health in France. In May, the brand recorded a total of 12,567 PV/LCV registrations, representing an 8.2% market share, an increase of 0.95 percentage points compared to May 2024. This progress allowed Citroën to gain two places in the passenger vehicle market and consolidate its third position in the light commercial vehicle segment. The Citroën C4 continues to maintain its strong second place in the highly competitive C-Hatch segment, proving that its restyling and unique positioning continue to attract the public. The C3 Aircross, for its part, gained one place in the B-SUV segment, demonstrating its renewed appeal. Finally, the C5 Aircross, currently undergoing a refresh, made a notable advance of three places in the C-SUV segment, highlighting the effectiveness of its update and its alignment with consumer expectations. In the electric light commercial vehicle segment, Citroën doubled its volumes compared to the previous year, achieving a market share of 13.2%, demonstrating significant momentum in this strategic segment for professionals and businesses.

These strong results in May attest to the increasing appeal of the Citroën C3 in France, particularly its electric version. While ë-C3 production may have experienced some disruptions in recent weeks, it appears that deliveries have resumed at a sustained pace. The numerous pending orders should allow this positive momentum to continue in the coming months, ensuring sustained growth for the brand. The success of the ë-C3 is all the more beneficial for Citroën as it is supported by the solid performances of the C4 and the renewed attractiveness of the C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross, creating a positive synergy within the range. Citroën's ambition to make electric mobility accessible seems more on track than ever, paving a promising path for the years to come.
