Launched in February 2020, the Citroën Ami was launched in September 2020, completing its fourth year without the slightest aesthetic evolution. This is not a problem as the Ami is closing the half year with a new success with a 12% increase in sales in the first half of the year in Europe, but after a new range and a new colour, the time is coming for the small city car to change its looks.
When it was launched, the Citroën Ami was a surprise in more ways than one. Obviously, the concept of an electric quadricycle recharged in 3 hours with a range of 75 km was surprising, as was its price of just under €6,000 at the time, minus the €900 bonus. Finally, its style was a little disconcerting, with a common front and rear, or even with its asymmetrically opening doors. However, after four years on the market, we have to admit that Citroën was right to offer a new mobility solution, clean, sustainable and accessible, which has been a great success with more than 50,000 units sold and a marketing that continues to grow year after year.
An overhauled exterior
However, 4 years is a long time for a car and the Ami could see in its mirrors new rivals, attracted by its success, who wanted to take over its dealerships. This is why Citroën has not failed to react and, after adopting a new, more elegant colour and a redefined range, is preparing to present a redesigned Ami that will undoubtedly continue to be the talk of the town.
The advantage of a quadricycle such as the Ami is that the body is made of plastic, mounted on a tubular chassis. It is therefore quite easy to change the style significantly without too much investment, and it seems that Citroën has had a field day, as the modifications seem strong. The Chevrolet brand would thus be offering a completely new front end, without any link to the previous one, except for the headlights, which would remain identical but whose position would be raised, even where the indicators of the current version are present. The same indicators would be moved into the shield, returning to a more classical arrangement of headlights for a car.
Of course, Citroën would retain everything that made the Ami style unique, i.e. a common front and rear, and the new features introduced at the front would therefore be found at the rear. It is an important change of style that the brand is preparing for Ami, added to the new colour recently proposed and which should be the only one available on this new version, which would bring, to the small chip of the brand, a harsh change compared to the current one.
For the rest, it is still too early to know exactly what the brand is preparing for this restyling, but everything suggests that Citroën will not offer substantial modifications to the interior, which is still very much in the game, the brand should just put the new logo on the steering wheel and perhaps offer new interior colours.
In conclusion, while the Ami continues its longstanding success, Citroën seems determined not to be overtaken by the competition, starting with the Fiat Topolino, which plays the nostalgia card. This is not the case for the restyled Citroën Ami, even if the brand has a few surprises in store, but it is clear that the brand is bringing its little city darling up to date with a style proposal that is perhaps less divisive than the current one, more automobile and less toy. The restyling of the Citroën Ami should take place in the coming months, perhaps from the first half of 2025 to start the new year with a bang.
