Among them, driver drowsiness and prolonged loss of concentration quickly stood out as the leading causes of fatal accidents on fast lanes. Faced with this alarming reality, the PSA Group, under the technical impulse of Citroen, engaged in researching active safety electronic solutions capable of monitoring the dynamic behavior of the vehicle without relieving the driver of their ultimate responsibility.
It was in this context of technological breakthrough that the AFIL program was born. Developed to counter involuntary trajectory drift, this system was presented for the very first time in 2004 on the restyled first-generation Citroen C5, as well as on the brand-new Citroen C4. Far from being a short-lived gadget, this technology immediately established itself as a high-end technological signature for the French manufacturer, which integrated it from 2005 into the catalog of its majestic Citroen C6 saloon, and later on the Citroen DS5. By democratizing a lane departure warning system in mainstream market segments, Citroen jumped ahead of most global manufacturers and reinforced its brand image as an avant-garde builder concerned with protecting its users.
Beneath the technology: how the original AFIL worked
The operation of the first-generation AFIL relied on a particularly original and sophisticated technical architecture, created at a time when real-time image processing by onboard cameras was only in its industrial infancy. To detect the crossing of a road marking, Citroen chose to implement six infrared sensors positioned underneath the front bumper of the vehicle, evenly distributed on each side of the front fascia. When the vehicle crossed a line without the driver activating their turn signal, the computer interpreted the maneuver as an involuntary anomaly.
The great strength of this innovation lay in its alert delivery mode: instead of a shrill audio beep that could have frightened the driver or woken up the passengers, Citroen developed a haptic alert through driver seat vibrations. Actuators built into the side bolsters of the seat cushion triggered on the side corresponding to the line drift: a vibration on the left if the left line was clipped, and a vibration on the right for the right line. Even today, user testimonials on enthusiast forums recall the surprising effectiveness and the highly perceptible nature of this setup, which instantly managed to recapture the driver's attention.
From warning to action: a constant evolution
Over the decades, technological progress in electronic components and the rise of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have profoundly transformed the initial setup imagined by Citroen. During the 2010s, the infrared sensors placed under the chassis gradually gave way to digital cameras mounted at the top of the windshield, behind the central rearview mirror. This major technological shift increased analysis precision by providing geometric road shape recognition, better management of weather variations such as rain or fog, and a lowered activation threshold to secure urban journeys.
This technical mutation marked the transition from simple passive warning to active lane keep assist. Nowadays, contemporary models in the range like the Citroen C5 X, the Citroen C5 Aircross, or the Citroen C3 city car no longer just warn the driver with sensory signals; they work in tandem with the electric power steering to automatically correct the trajectory by applying a corrective torque to the steering wheel when the vehicle drifts between 65 and 180 km/h.
Having become a central requirement of Euro NCAP safety protocols, this technology has been enshrined by European legislative changes. Recent safety regulations, such as the GSR II standards, now mandate the presence of these lane-keeping assist systems on all new vehicles marketed in Europe. AFIL has thus turned into an industry standard, automatically reactivating at every startup, even though some motorists occasionally debate its intrusive nature on poorly marked secondary roads.
In conclusion, the Lane Departure Warning System aligns perfectly with Citroen’s DNA of utilitarian innovation, much like hydropneumatic suspension or power brakes did in their time. Initially designed as a pragmatic shield against the dangers of highway drowsiness, this simple yet incredibly clever system became widespread to the point of being included today on all new European cars under the constraint of the law.
Over time and technological leaps, the original AFIL mutated to become a comprehensive lane-keeping system, interconnected with modern electric steering layouts. While technically nothing remains of the infrared sensors fitted under the bumpers of the C4 and C5 from the early 2000s, history will remember that it was indeed Citroen that opened the way to this road safety revolution, proving that progress only makes sense if it is shared and useful to the greatest number of people.
