The return of an icon: Citroën officially confirms the rebirth of the 2CV!

The new Citroën 2CV

Stellantis has just unveiled the main guidelines of its new strategic plan called FaSTLAne 2030, an ambitious roadmap in which the Citroën brand is preparing to play a leading role. Beyond the group's macroeconomic orientations, this major announcement lifted the veil on a massive surprise that is already generating immense enthusiasm in the global automotive landscape. While rumors pointed towards an audacious move, the confirmation is now official: a new Citroën 2CV is indeed in preparation. This major project, which combines the reinterpretation of a unique historical heritage with the contemporary demands of the energy transition, reveals itself today through the first technical and strategic details shared by the manufacturer's management.

The E-Cars project and the reconquest of segment A

Industry observers already knew that Stellantis and its French subsidiary were actively working on developing a new category of compact vehicles. This initiative specifically aims to offer truly affordable electric cars in order to reinvest in Segment A, a category of historical city cars that saw almost all of its representatives disappear in recent years due to the costs of emission compliance and electrification.

With the official presentation of the FaSTLAne 2030 plan, Stellantis turning this ambition into reality by officializing the E-Cars project. Led jointly by Citroën and Fiat, this large-scale industrial program is based on a meaningful acronym where the "E" embodies four fundamental pillars: European, Emotional, Electric, and Ecological. Designed to be produced in Europe for European customers, these future city cars received symbolic backing from the European Commission for their capacity to safeguard industrial employment and boost local engineering.

On the industrial side, this car could be produced at the Pomigliano site in Italy but nothing has been confirmed yet for this future 2 CV. To meet this profitability challenge, the E-Cars project models will rely on cutting-edge electric technologies co-developed with selected partners, ensuring a fast time-to-market and controlled manufacturing costs to address the unprecedented contraction of the small affordable car market.

The 2CV Surprise: a myth reimagined for the Paris Motor Show

The true shockwave of this presentation lies in the previsionnal confirmation of the future Citroën 2CV. To accompany this historic announcement, the manufacturer released an enigmatic teaser image, showing the silhouette of the future "Deuche" subtly hidden in the darkness. This preliminary shot confirms that design teams will not merely evoke a vague philosophical spirit, but will retain aesthetic elements directly inspired by the original silhouette of the popular icon.

The schedule is already locked in. Xavier Chardon, CEO of Citroën, has set a date for the public and professionals this coming October. This timeline perfectly coincides with the 2026 Paris Motor Show, confirming that the brand will present its new 2CV in the form of an avant-garde concept car during this major international event.

To understand the philosophy behind this project, one must look at the full statement from Xavier Chardon "Reinventing the 2 CV of tomorrow is a challenge and an immense responsibility. The original 2 CV was never designed to become an icon. It became one because it offered more freedom to people. The new 2 CV will perpetuate this spirit — not out of nostalgia, but by reinventing its simplicity and accessibility for today's world. Electric. Essential. Affordable. Human. Just as the original once democratized mobility, the new 2 CV will re-enchant mobility in electric for a new generation thanks to a highly desirable model. The return of the 2 CV is not just the return of a legendary name. It is the return of a bold and optimistic idea of progress. An idea deeply Citroën."

A 2028 commercial launch at a price below €15,000

The wait for enthusiasts and the general public will have to extend until 2028, the official year for the commercial launch of the production version. The commercial stakes of this future 2CV are paramount for the brand: it will bear the heavy responsibility of offering a 100% electric alternative at an extremely competitive price tag, announced below the symbolic threshold of €15,000.

By establishing itself permanently in the lineup, this new model will allow Citroën to bridge the strategic gap currently existing between the Ami urban mobility solution and the recent C3 versatile city car. This positioning redefines the concept of mobility for all by targeting urban and suburban motorists looking for a simple, versatile, and economical vehicle for everyday use, without sacrificing the sympathy capital and visual identity of their ride. The responsibility resting on the engineers' shoulders is immense, as succeeding the most famous vehicle in the brand's history requires reconciling modern economic rationality with the technical ingenuity that characterized the Très Petite Voiture (TPV) of 1948.

The announcement of the Citroën 2CV's revival marks a historic milestone that many industry experts deemed unrealistic under current regulatory environments. Yet, the manufacturer is preparing to tackle this industrial challenge with pragmatism and optimism. The calendar is now accelerating, promising the reveal of a first concept car this coming October 2026, before transitioning to series production by 2028. Reviving the "Deuche" within a modern lineup stands as both a dream for enthusiasts and a major strategic challenge, which only an audacious brand like Citroën is fully capable of successfully executing.
