Following its successful launch on European roads, Citroën is continuing the international expansion of its flagship model by opening orders for the new C5 Aircross in Japan. This rollout marks a key step in the French brand's strategy in Asia, aiming to strengthen its presence in a demanding market that appreciates distinctive design. To win over Japanese customers, Citroën is focusing on a clear, technological offering resolutely focused on electrification. This new SUV consolidates an increasingly comprehensive range, providing a serious and original alternative in the C-segment while upholding the brand's core values of comfort and serenity.
A simplified range based on Plus and Max trims
For its commercial introduction in Japan, the new Citroën C5 Aircross relies on an optimized range structure available in two trim levels: Plus and Max. The Plus version serves as a balanced entry-level model, combining manufacturing quality with essential everyday practicality. It already includes the brand's fundamentals, notably the next-generation user interface with a panoramic screen and digital instrument cluster.
The Max trim, the flagship of the catalog, takes the French luxury experience to its peak. It exclusively features the C-Zen Lounge concept, an interior environment designed as a true mobile living room. Passengers enjoy the latest generation of Citroën Advanced Comfort seats, featuring 15 mm high-density foam, as well as heating, ventilation, and massage functions for the driver and front passenger. Rear passengers are not forgotten, with 50 mm more legroom and heated seats. The technological highlight remains the 13-inch vertical screen, the largest in the Stellantis ecosystem, centralizing all infotainment controls. This range structure allows Citroën to offer a vehicle ready to meet all needs while simplifying the customer's choice through a single engine option.
The exclusive choice of 48V Hybrid for maximum efficiency
On the technical side, Citroën is making a major strategic shift in Japan. While the Berlingo retains a diesel offering, the new C5 Aircross follows in the footsteps of the C3 and C4 by exclusively adopting an electrified powertrain. The manufacturer has made a relevant choice by installing the MHEV Hybrid 145 (136 hp) system. This latest-generation device combines a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine with an e-DCS6 dual-clutch gearbox integrating a 16 kW electric motor.
This 48V mild-hybrid system is particularly suited to Japan's dense urban traffic conditions. It allows for up to 50% of city trips to be made in electric mode, drastically reducing fuel consumption—rated at 19.4 km/liter under the WLTC cycle—and CO2 emissions. By bypassing purely thermal, plug-in hybrid, or electric versions, Citroën offers a turnkey solution that combines driving flexibility and sobriety without the charging constraints for urban customers.
Competitive pricing for a now complete Citroën range
The pricing of the new Citroën C5 Aircross in Japan is positioned aggressively against local and European competition. The Plus trim is priced at 5,350,000 yen, or approximately €28,890 (at an exchange rate of 1 yen = €0.0054). The high-end Max version is offered at 5,700,000 yen, representing approximately €30,780. These prices include top-tier technological equipment, including the Progressive Hydraulic Cushions (PHC) suspension as standard and, for the first time, LED matrix headlights and an unintended acceleration prevention assistance system.
The arrival of this model allows Citroën to have a family of four consistent models in the archipelago: C3, C4, Berlingo, and now C5 Aircross. This multi-segment coverage is a major asset for the brand, which hopes to capitalize on its strong identity to increase sales volumes. The design, marked by the "Citroën Light Wings" and 19-inch "Zircon" wheels, gives the vehicle a prestigious presence essential for succeeding in this niche but passionate market.
Conclusion: a confirmed global ambition
With this successful launch in Japan, the new Citroën C5 Aircross confirms its status as a global vehicle. This step precedes an expected expansion to other continents, notably Latin America and particularly Argentina. By now offering a range of four models, three of which are exclusively hybrid in Japan, Citroën demonstrates its ability to adapt its offer to local specificities while remaining true to its DNA: stylistic boldness and benchmark comfort.
