Stellantis has announced a major milestone for its Vigo plant: the production of the latest generation of light commercial vehicles—including the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner, Opel Combo, and Fiat Doblò—has surpassed 2 million units. This achievement is all the more symbolic as the 2-millionth vehicle is a Citroën Berlingo passenger version, the model that originally defined the ludospace segment and inspired an entire range of versatile utility vehicles. Since their 2018 launch, these vehicles, available in both internal combustion and fully electric versions, have solidified their success among private and professional users alike.
2 million units: a manufacturing and commercial triumph
The Vigo plant produces 1,200 units daily, supplying over 70 global markets. Since 2018, the Peugeot Rifter/Partner, Citroën Berlingo/Berlingo Van, Opel/Vauxhall Combo Life/Cargo, and Fiat Doblò/Doblò Van have dominated the European market, with 137,000 units sold this year alone, capturing a 49% market share in the EU. Their versatility—offering multiple body styles and configurations—makes them ideal for both personal and business use.
The choice of a Citroën Berlingo as the 2-millionth vehicle is no coincidence. This model pioneered the ludospace concept within PSA in the 1990s, later joined by other Stellantis brands. Today, these light commercial vehicles are available with traditional and electric powertrains (50 kWh lithium-ion battery), catering to evolving mobility needs.
Utility vehicles: the backbone of Vigo’s legacy
Since 1996, Vigo has manufactured 6.5 million utility vehicles across three generations (M49/59, B9, and K9). This legacy is part of a broader history: since 1958, the plant has produced 8.2 million utility vehicles, accounting for 51% of its total output. For context, Vigo has assembled over 16 million vehicles in total, including the iconic Citroën C15, an early electric vehicle introduced in 1995.
With 51% of its production dedicated to utility vehicles, Vigo stands as a global benchmark for Stellantis. These models, designed for practicality and innovation, have transformed the plant into a leader in both thermal and electric vehicle manufacturing. Their success is supported by public investments, such as those from Galicia’s Ministry of Economy and Industry.
While Vigo celebrates 2 million units in 7 years, total production for this generation already exceeds this figure, thanks to additional manufacturing sites in Ellesmere Port (UK), Mangualde (Portugal), and soon Turkey. This success underscores the global appeal of these vehicles, praised for their versatility and advanced technology.
As Emanuele Cappellano, Global Director of Stellantis Pro One, stated: « These models embody our leadership in sustainable mobility, offering a full range of solutions for every driving need. » José Luis Alonso Mosquera, Vigo Plant Director, added: « Reaching 2 million units fuels our commitment to quality and continuous improvement. »
With 2 million units produced in 7 years (compared to 6.5 million since 1996), this generation of light commercial vehicles (K9 program) reaffirms its status as a global benchmark. Their popularity, driven by strategic production sites and growing demand, highlights their relevance for both private and professional users. A story of innovation and industrial excellence that continues to unfold.
