Turkey is becoming an increasingly strategic market for Citroën. With remarkable commercial performance, the brand confirms its dynamic growth trajectory. This success is part of a broader context where the Stellantis group, of which Citroën is a part, is consolidating its position in this high-potential country. With this in mind, Stellantis has sealed a major agreement to locally produce the K9 program utility vehicles, a family that includes our beloved Citroën Berlingo, as well as its counterparts, the Peugeot Partner and Fiat Doblo. This strategic decision marks a turning point, confirming the importance of Turkey in the group's industrial ecosystem.
The Stellantis-Tofaş agreement: a significant investment
This is a major piece of news announced following the agreement between the leaders of Stellantis and Tofaş, a historical partner of the group in Turkey. Tofaş, thus returning to its origins as a manufacturer, will launch the production of the Fiat Doblo and similar models from the K9 program. This collaboration involves a substantial investment of €256 million. Production is scheduled to begin in late 2026 and will continue until 2034.
The project is remarkably ambitious, with a target of 660,000 vehicles to be produced over an eight-year period. What is particularly interesting is the distribution of this production: approximately 80% of the vehicles will be destined for the Turkish market, which demonstrates the group's strong commitment to meeting local demand. This local assembly will allow Stellantis to significantly develop and strengthen its presence in the light commercial vehicle segment, a key market for its future growth. The production agreement, signed with Stellantis Europe SPA, also grants Tofaş the production and distribution rights for the light commercial vehicle and Combi versions of the K9 model for the Stellantis brands (Fiat, Opel, Citroën, and Peugeot).
Local production for more accessible pricing
This local production in Turkey has a scope far beyond the industrial aspect. It will enable Citroën, as well as the entire Stellantis group, to capture new market shares in the utility vehicle segment. By producing directly on-site, manufacturers can significantly reduce logistics and distribution costs. This will translate into more accessible prices for Turkish customers. More competitive prices are a major asset in this market and are essential for stimulating demand.
For our Citroën Berlingo, as well as the Peugeot Partner and Fiat Doblo, this strategy is a real opportunity to achieve even greater success. By making these vehicles more affordable, the group ensures that this generation, already highly appreciated for its versatility and qualities, can reach a wider audience. I have no doubt that this decision will open up new perspectives for growth and brand awareness for Citroën and its cousins. The integration of a multi-energy platform will also make it possible to respond to market developments and offer solutions adapted to local needs, whether electric or thermal.
With the integration of the Tofaş plant in Turkey, the K9 program, which includes the Berlingo and its cousins, will now be produced at four major production sites. Indeed, manufacturing already takes place in Spain, at Vigo, in Portugal, at Mangualde, and in the United Kingdom, at Ellesmere Port, for the electric version. The addition of Turkey marks a further step in the expansion of this utility vehicle program.
This diversification of production on a global scale allows the Berlingo and its counterparts to be more competitive and better meet the demands of different markets. It is proof of the solidity and success of this generation, which continues to gain ground. Thanks to this new production capacity in Turkey, the Berlingo and its cousins will be able to win over more customers worldwide and thus consolidate their already established success. This is excellent news that confirms Citroën's place as a major and dynamic player in the utility vehicle market, ready to take on the challenges of tomorrow.
