[Retrospective] Citroën 2CV: special series from Dolly to 007

The Citroën 2CV France 3

Our exploration of the Citroën 2CV special editions continues, following our introduction of the pioneering Spot. Today, we delve deeper into three other significant interpretations of the Deuche: the colorful 2CV Dolly, the nautical 2CV France 3, and the 2CV 007, a limited edition inspired by the famous secret agent. Each, in its own way, has contributed to forging the legend of this popular and endearing car.

The 2CV Dolly: a rainbow of colors (1985-1986)

The 2CV Dolly, launched in March 1985, aimed to be an ode to youth and color. It stood out with its combinations of bright and contrasting hues, breaking with the more sober tradition of the 2CV. The first series offered four color pairings: Vallelunga Red with Cormoran Grey, Meije White with Bamboo Green, Rialto Yellow with Delage Red, and finally Cormoran Grey paired with Rialto Yellow. These bold associations aimed to appeal to a younger and more female clientele looking for an original and cheerful vehicle. The interior was not to be outdone, with specific upholstery sometimes echoing the exterior colors. Given its success, the 2CV Dolly went through several production phases, with new color combinations appearing over time, demonstrating Citroën's desire to maintain the appeal of this model with a renewed and lively aesthetic. The Dolly thus helped to give the 2CV a youthful boost in the second half of the 80s.

The 2CV France 3: the spirit of the sea (1983)

The 2CV France 3, marketed in 1983, was part of a particular sporting context: Citroën's support for the French team participating in the America's Cup. This special series adopted an aesthetic directly inspired by the world of sailing. Its white body was adorned with wide blue stripes on the sides and hood, evoking the colors of the France 3 sailboat. A sticker representing the sailing team's logo was proudly affixed to the tailgate. The interior followed this maritime theme with seats covered in ecru canvas embellished with thin blue stripes, reminiscent of sails and the marine world. Produced in only 2000 units, the 2CV France 3 has become a sought-after collector's item, symbolizing the alliance between the popular automobile and the prestigious world of sailing, and demonstrating the 2CV's ability to adapt to various themes.

The Citroën 2CV 007: for secret agents (1981)

The appearance of the 2CV in the James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only" in 1981 was not limited to a simple presence on screen. Citroën marketed a special limited series, the 2CV 007, to capitalize on this event. This version, based on the 2CV 6 Spécial, was distinguished by its Jaune Hélios (AC 336) color and its specific decorations: black stickers imitating bullet impacts and the "007" logo. Approximately 500 units were produced for the French market. This limited series is now highly sought after by collectors, testifying to the lasting impact of this film appearance on the collective imagination and on the legend of the 2CV.

The Dolly with its colorful joie de vivre, the France 3 with its nautical elegance, and the 2CV 007 with its nod to the world of espionage, illustrate the richness and diversity of the Citroën 2CV's facets. These examples show how, beyond its initial design, the Deuche was able to reinvent itself and capture imaginations, whether through creative commercial initiatives or striking cultural appearances. They continue today to fuel the legend of this truly unique car.
