Rétromobile 2026: Citroën’s masterful comeback, bridging heritage and the future

Stand Citroën Rétromobile 2026

Just days after the Brussels Motor Show—where the brand pulled out all the stops to showcase the world premiere of the Citroën ELO—Rétromobile 2026 provided the perfect stage to introduce this latest concept to the French public. After several years of absence, Citroën is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Rétromobile with a spectacular return. The brand has delivered one of the most beautiful manufacturer stands of the show, featuring an exceptional lineup of six concept cars, including ELO, alongside a world-renowned Traction 15/6 Cabriolet. Here is a tour of a stand that is truly worth the journey.

An exceptional showcase

Located in Pavilion 7, Citroën’s vast 500 m² stand clearly demonstrates the brand's commitment to its fans. It’s a "grand homecoming" in every sense. For any car enthusiast, and especially for any Citroëniste, seeing these concepts gathered in one place is pure enchantment. From the emotionally charged 2CV Type A to the nearly unique Traction 15/6 Cabriolet, and a selection of concepts from the former Citroën Conservatory, the display highlights a rich history of boldness and a vision for the automobile that remains unique in the world.

Beyond the cars, the stand design itself is a highlight. Eschewing overbearing screens and complex architecture, the focus remains purely on the vehicles. Information about each concept’s name and year is elegantly displayed on the floor, allowing the beauty of these machines to speak for themselves.

A passionate journey for enthusiasts

ELO proudly takes center stage, sporting a vibrant orange-red hue and a unique style that immediately draws the eye. Visitors are invited to discover its interior and innovative features up close. For its first public appearance in France, ELO is remarkably accessible—unlike at many major shows, here you can truly appreciate the details of the concepts, which is noteworthy given their priceless value.

While I could talk for hours about every vehicle present, three concepts particularly stood out to me for the way they shaped my passion for the brand. First is Xanae, whose style remains strikingly relevant 30 years after its debut. Its "monospaced" sedan silhouette paved the way for the Xsara Picasso and subsequent C4 Picasso generations, proving how deeply it influenced the brand's history.

Another major highlight is C-Cactus. Nearly 20 years later, this "essential" car concept—using lightness as a tool for sustainability—is more relevant than ever. Its friendly, cheerful design and "essentialist" philosophy continue to infuse Citroën’s current lineup, focusing on careful detail without unnecessary superfluity.

Finally, the Karin concept remains a showstopper. This pyramidal "UFO" from 1981 was a laboratory of innovation, featuring cameras instead of mirrors and pulsed air instead of wipers. It perfectly encapsulates Citroën's DNA: being profoundly different. A nod also goes to Activa 1, which showcased the technological mastery that led to the Hydractive suspension.

Unique icons that defined the industry

The stand also features the 2CV Type A, a survivor of the 250 units produced before the war as part of the TPV program. Of the four remaining cars, this is the only one to have been restored, representing Citroën’s historic drive to make mobility accessible to all.

And then, there is the magnificent Traction 15/6 Cabriolet. Finished in a stunning red with matching interior, this car is a marvel with a poetic history: it was present at the very first Rétromobile 50 years ago. Citroën is likely the only brand to exhibit the exact same car at the same show half a century later. That is the essence of Citroën.

An inheritance to cherish

In conclusion, the Citroën stand at Rétromobile 2026 is a must-see. It’s rare to see a brand honor its 107-year heritage so gracefully while linking it to its future. For us Citroënistes, seeing this legacy shared with the world is a true joy. Bravo to Citroën for this beautiful exhibition; it was truly hard to leave.
