Retromobile 2026: Citroën Karin concept wins the preservation trophy

Citroën Karin

For the 2026 edition of the Retromobile show, the French brand once again captivated the audience with an exceptionally rich display. In the heart of Hall 1, Citroën orchestrated a true journey through time, showcasing no fewer than six iconic concept cars, including the recent and highly acclaimed ELO. This strategic deployment, highlighting the brand’s stylistic and technological continuity, was completed by the presence of a rare automotive masterpiece: an extremely rare Citroën Traction 15/6 cabriolet.

Within this gallery of visionary prototypes, one model particularly caught the attention of both experts and the public: the Citroën Karin. This 1980 concept car, forty-six years after its first appearance, continues to fascinate with its radical pyramidal design. Beyond its aesthetics, the remarkable state of preservation of this vehicle was officially honored during the event. The Karin concept stood out by receiving a prestigious award, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the brand’s experimental heritage.

The Retromobile preservation trophies: excellence in authenticity

Launched during the 2024 edition, the Retromobile Preservation Trophies were created with a clear ambition: to identify and honor vehicles, both cars and motorcycles, whose state of preservation or quality of restoration scrupulously respects the original configuration. Unlike other elegance contests, the emphasis here is on historical authenticity and the survival of original components, which are crucial for understanding industrial history.

This year, the expert jury was composed of eminent figures from the world of collecting and automotive expertise:

  • Chip Connor, world-renowned collector and member of the Best of the Best organization;

  • Sylvain Reisser, Deputy Automotive Editor-in-Chief at Le Figaro;

  • François Melcion, Founding member and historical figure of the Retromobile show;

  • Laurent Hériou, Vice-President of the FIVA Technical Commission (International Federation of Ancient Vehicles);

  • Mathias Doutreleau, well-known organizer of the Swiss Concours d’Élégance.

These trophies fit perfectly into the DNA of Retromobile, which remains the global showcase for classic cars. By rewarding Citroën for the second consecutive year, the jury validates the rigorous conservation strategy led by L’Aventure Peugeot Citroën DS. In 2025, the brand had already won in the "Pre-War" category with the legendary Citroën-Kégresse K1 "Silver Crescent". This historic double win demonstrates that the association, the guardian of the Sochaux heritage, possesses unparalleled expertise in keeping this fabulous legacy alive.

The Citroën Karin: a rewarded pyramid of innovations

The highlight of the ceremony was the announcement of the Citroën Karin's victory in the "Post-War" category. The trophy was officially presented to Loïc de La Roche, General Manager of L’Aventure Peugeot Citroën DS, and Leslie Peltier, Global Communications Director for Citroën. This choice by the jury is not surprising for anyone who takes the time to closely observe this monolith of glass and steel.

Designed in 1980 under the direction of designer Trevor Fiore, the Karin is more than just a geometric sculpture. Although its pyramidal shape is its most obvious visual signature, the prototype is packed with avant-garde technical solutions. For example, it features rear-view mirrors replaced by cameras, a technology that is only now becoming common but was completely revolutionary over four decades ago. Another feat is the absence of conventional windshield wipers, replaced by a pulsed air system designed to clear water from the glass.

The interior is equally innovative, featuring a central driving position flanked by two slightly recessed passenger seats, offering optimal ergonomics and a panoramic view. The instrumentation consists of electronic screens informing the driver about the vehicle’s status, prefiguring today’s digital cockpits.

During the award ceremony, Loïc de La Roche expressed his gratitude to those working behind the scenes:

"This award honors, above all, the exceptional commitment of all the members and volunteers of L'Aventure Citroën, past and present, who put all their energy into the preservation and promotion of Citroën’s heritage."

A victory for heritage and the future of the brand

In conclusion, Citroën did more than just show up at Retromobile 2026. By exhibiting concepts from all eras in a state of preservation bordering on perfection, the brand reaffirms its unique identity in the global automotive market. The Karin, with its timeless aesthetics, proves that innovation at Citroën is not a fleeting concept but a core value.

This second consecutive success at the Preservation Trophies highlights the immense work carried out by the teams at L’Aventure Peugeot Citroën DS. Whether through maintaining the collections at the Conservatoire or providing spare parts for collectors, the association ensures the longevity of a heritage of inestimable value. For enthusiasts and expert observers alike, Citroën confirms that to invent the future, it is essential to cherish and respect its past.
