Italian car market 2026: Citroën progresses thanks to electric and C3 models

Citroën C3

The European automotive market is undergoing profound mutations, yet certain commercial trajectories demonstrate remarkable resilience and strategic relevance. This is precisely the case for Citroën in the Italian market, which has just closed the month of June 2026 with a highly positive momentum. By registering a spectacular volume growth of 23% compared to June of the previous year, the French brand confirms the accuracy of its product and pricing orientations. This summer acceleration allows the manufacturer to finish the first half of the year on a positive note. This success is undeniably anchored by the double offensive led by the new Citroën C3 family and the C3 Aircross SUV, two pillars of the range that appeal to an increasingly broad audience. Beyond traditional internal combustion engines, the electric vehicle offensive now stands out as a genuine driving force for Citroën across the Alps, turning an industrial challenge into a formidable growth lever.

Global performance in the Italian Market: a strengthened foothold

A detailed analysis of the consolidated data from Dataforce highlights the renewed strength of the French brand in the peninsula. Citroën wrapped up the first half of 2026 by securing a global market share of 3.7%, which represents a significant gain of half a percentage point compared to the same period in the previous financial year. This growth reflects a very effective commercial penetration within a saturated competitive landscape. Even more telling of consumer confidence, the manufacturer significantly improved its position in the strategic private customer channel. In this segment, which measures a brand's true appeal to the general public outside of corporate fleets or tactical registrations, the market share reached 3.5% since the beginning of the year.

These cumulative results allow Citroën to firmly establish itself within the Top 10 best-selling brands in Italy. This overall commercial strength is not limited to passenger cars, as the light commercial vehicle sector actively contributed to this dynamic, with a half-year market share climbing to 5.7%, signing a 0.9 point increase, and a remarkable peak at 8.2% in June alone. This comprehensive performance shows that the brand has tailored its lineup to meet the precise needs of Italian households and professionals, a fundamental trend heavily boosted by exceptional results in the field of electrification.

Electric as a true engine of growth against local giants

To fully appreciate Citroën's performance, it is necessary to contextualize the status of the Italian automotive market regarding the energy transition. Unlike France or Northern European countries, Italy historically shows a much more timid and gradual adoption of 100% electric vehicles, often slowed by developing charging infrastructures and fluctuating state incentives. Yet, it is precisely in this challenging environment that the French brand masterfully capitalizes on its strategy of democratizing clean energy. In the first half of 2026, Citroën achieved a spectacular market share of 8.2% in the electric vehicle segment, a score more than double its penetration in the general internal combustion market.

This statistic, up steadily by 0.9 points compared to the first half of 2025, reflects the absolute relevance of Citroën’s positioning. The manufacturer is not merely following the trend; it leads the way by becoming the top brand of the Stellantis group in this specific market segment in Italy. The standout aspect of this performance lies in its symbolic and competitive dimension: the French brand is now outperforming Fiat on the home turf of the Turin firm regarding electric vehicles. To maintain this lead, Citroën is expanding its lineup immediately with the introduction of the ë-C3 Tonic special series, a version designed to make electric mobility even more attractive, accessible, and suited to the daily commutes of Italian drivers.

Model dynamics: C3, C3 Aircross, and C5 Aircross leading the way

The breakdown of figures by model confirms the status of the Citroën C3 as an undeniable best-seller. The French city car continues to drive the brand's volumes by claiming the title of the second best-selling gasoline car on the peninsula over the entire half-year. Even better, when combining internal combustion and electric versions, the C3 stands as the best-selling model in its segment (Segment B), across all energy types. In June, its growth among private customers jumped by 0.7 percentage points compared to last year, proving that the model's design and value proposition resonate strongly with final buyers.

Alongside it, the new C3 Aircross SUV confirms its operational rise. Recently awarded the prestigious "Best User Car in Europe 2026" title at the AUTOBEST Conquest awards, this compact family vehicle bouscules the rules by offering up to seven seats in a controlled footprint. Its robust silhouette, characterized by a ground clearance exceeding 200 mm and a muscular design, appeals heavily to families. The figures speak for themselves: the C3 Aircross ranks third in its segment for 100% electric versions in the first half of the year, while securing the third step of the podium for gasoline version sales during the second quarter.

Finally, the flagship of the range, the C5 Aircross SUV, also participates in the brand's visibility throughout the country. As the official vehicle for major cycling events such as the Giro Women and Giro Next Gen organized by RCS Sport, it highlights Citroën's historical commitment to high-level comfort thanks to its Advanced Comfort® suspensions. Now available in a 100% electric version with Comfort Range (520 km range) and Long Range variants (up to 680 km range thanks to a 97 kWh battery), the large SUV completes a technological offer that also includes plug-in hybrid powertrains and an accessible Hybrid 145 automatic starting at 28,900 euros.

At the end of this first half of 2026, Citroën's Italian subsidiary shows a particularly encouraging state of health. While the overall increase in its market share (+0.5 points) may seem modest on a global industrial scale, it hides top-tier performances in the key areas of gasoline and electric vehicles. The only downside lies in the temporary underperformance in the hybrid market, a situation stemming directly from production and supply chain constraints rather than a lack of customer interest. With order books full, the gradual resolution of these industrial tensions should unlock significant additional growth potential. All indicators are green to approach the second half of the year with serenity and optimism. Citroën now possesses extremely healthy commercial foundations and an attractive range of new products to capitalize on this trend and deliver even stronger results in the Italian automotive market in the coming months.
