Manufacturing a car generates a lot of waste, which can have a significant impact on the environment. Fortunately, like all manufacturers, Stellantis has taken measures to minimise this impact, particularly at the Porto Real plant in Brazil, where the new C3 for Latin America is manufactured, which has achieved the feat of producing zero solid waste.
The Porto Real plant, a huge industrial complex located 150 km from Rio de Janeiro, produces the new Citroën C3 as well as the C4 Cactus and soon the new C3 Aircross. This plant has a modern management system that eliminates all solid waste from its manufacturing processes, which means that more than 200 tonnes of material is no longer sent to landfill each year, with a direct positive impact on the environment.
All the materials generated by the factory are separated within the complex itself. Items such as cardboard, for example, are transported to a processing unit within the industrial complex, where they are pressed and grouped. The same goes for plastics, which are processed and sent to recycling centres. Wood, on the other hand, is separated and crushed into chips, an essential element in the production of biomass.
Ferrous and non-ferrous metal waste is also sent for recycling, while organic waste is used for co-processing in cement plants. Even food waste has a specific destination: in this case, the production of compost and organic fertiliser by a Stellantis partner company.
This attention has allowed the Porto Real industrial complex to present an innovative feature in line with the most stringent environmental protection policies: all the vehicles produced there generate no solid waste, helping to limit the impact on landfill sites and contributing to the circular economy.
The Porto Real plant has several other policies aimed at sustainability and integration with the local community. These measures will be detailed in Citroën's next communications during 2023.
The Stellantis Group has embarked on a major transformation plan with the aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2038. Although there is still a lot of work to be done, the elimination of solid waste from the Porto Real plant is a very strong environmental measure and demonstrates all the efforts being made to reduce the impact of the Group's car production.
