Citroën speeds into the future: first look at the new GEN4 Formula E challenger

2026 Citroën Formula E GEN4

Citroën's electric ambition: from learning to conquering GEN4

Officially involved in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship since this year, the Citroën brand is now taking a decisive step in its sporting program. While the current season is in full swing, the French manufacturer has not only confirmed its presence for the years to come but has also unveiled the first look at the next generation of racing cars. This announcement comes at a time of growing momentum for Citroën Racing, which has demonstrated remarkable competitiveness since its very first races.

The introduction of the GEN4, scheduled for Season 13 (2026/2027), will mark a major technological turning point. By partially revealing a "camouflage" livery of this future machine today, Citroën reaffirms its long-term commitment to high-performance electric mobility. This transition to a new technical era is an opportunity for the brand to consolidate its place on the global motorsport stage while capitalizing on the experience gained during this inaugural season.

A promising first season as a stepping stone

Citroën's commitment to Formula E is more than just a technological showcase; it is a high-level sporting challenge. For its first learning season, the brand has already made a strong impression by recording significant results: a brilliant victory and a pole position that proved the intrinsic quality of the team's technical and operational package. This successful start means Citroën is no longer seen as just a newcomer, but as a serious contender at the front of the grid.

The transition to GEN4 is part of this progressive dynamic. While the current season serves as a real-world laboratory to optimize energy management and tire understanding, the future car will be the tool of maturity. Citroën intends to take full advantage of the new regulations to close the gap with legacy teams and fight regularly for the world title. The goal is clear: to turn this year's isolated successes into consistent dominance upon the introduction of the new platform.

GEN4: the technical revolution of all-wheel drive

The GEN4 generation does more than just evolve the current concept; it revolutionizes it. The main innovation lies in the introduction of permanent All-Wheel Drive (AWD). Unlike current cars where traction is primarily handled by the rear axle, the GEN4 will have four-wheel drive at all times. This configuration will radically change the driving dynamics, offering optimized traction and better exploitation of available power, especially when exiting corners.

In terms of pure power, the figures are impressive. The GEN4 will deliver 450 kW in race conditions, up from 300 kW in the previous generation. In qualifying mode or during Attack Mode, power can soar up to 600 kW. At the same time, regenerative braking capacity increases to 700 kW, allowing for much greater energy recovery during deceleration phases.

Finally, aerodynamics have been completely redesigned. The GEN4 will offer two distinct configurations: a high-downforce package to maximize cornering speed during qualifying, and a low-drag setting to favor efficiency and overtaking during races. These technical evolutions promise faster, more strategic, and visually more spectacular racing.

Design between heritage and modernity: the transition livery

To accompany these technical changes, Citroën has worked on a strong visual identity. The partial livery revealed today adopts a sophisticated "camouflage" style, playing with the brand's graphic codes while still hiding some final bodywork details. The design emphasizes the double chevrons, historical emblems that are reinterpreted here in a dynamic and futuristic way.

Pierre Leclercq, Head of Design at Citroën, explains the philosophy behind this work: "With this livery, the objective was to continue the work around the graphic language of the chevrons. The two central chevrons bring more dynamism to the car, and it is from this point that we developed a gradient that extends over the entire bodywork. This design follows the one introduced for the 2025/26 season livery, creating a layered visual effect that reveals itself progressively as you get closer to the car. The livery we are presenting this week is a 'camouflage' livery, designed as a transition before the introduction of a more expressive and dynamic identity, integrating the colors of Citroën and its French heritage."

Towards a new chapter in Citroën's sporting history

By revealing these first images and specifications of the GEN4, Citroën confirms its desire to establish itself as a leader in high-performance electric mobility. This new car is not just a technical evolution; it embodies the ambition of a brand that has reinvented itself to embrace the challenges of the 21st century. With increased performance and more complex strategic management, Season 13 is already shaping up to be a historic milestone.

After a first season rich in lessons and marked by encouraging successes, Citroën Racing now has a clear roadmap. The GEN4 will be the primary instrument to capitalize on this foundation and eventually aim for the top of the global hierarchy. The date is set for 2026, with a visual identity that already promises to be one of the most iconic on the grid.
