We continue our summer series dedicated to the special editions that have shaped the history of the double chevron brand with a new round of exclusive articles. To open this season, we highlight the famous Citroën AX K-Way, an iconic model that perfectly succeeded in uniting the worlds of two popular brands for the direct benefit of motorists looking for originality.
The AX at launch: the efficiency revolution and marketing insight
The mid-1980s marked a historic turning point for the French manufacturer. Launched in 1986, exactly forty years ago, the Citroën AX had the heavy responsibility of succeeding the Visa while modernizing the manufacturer's city car lineup. This crucial model integrated major technical innovations derived from the ECO2000 research program, a series of prototypes focused on maximum efficiency. Thanks to an obsessive weight-saving design and the judicious use of composite materials, the AX displayed exceptional lightness, allowing record-breaking fuel consumption for the era. Its carefully sculpted aerodynamics, characterized by a drag coefficient of 0.31, confirmed its position as a technological benchmark in the affordable small car segment.
Very quickly, Citroën's sales management realized that this range needed to be animated dynamically to maintain public interest without committing heavy investments to a major restyling. The manufacturer multiplied exclusive versions aimed at young, urban customer profiles who were fond of lifestyle-oriented worlds. It was within this fertile context that the brand finely anticipated societal expectations by introducing, as early as 1988, an unprecedented proposition that would leave a lasting impression with its offbeat and trendy positioning

The AX K-Way: the specifics of a sportswear icon
It was therefore during 1988, a time when the K-Way clothing brand enjoyed immense popularity across Europe, that Citroën chose to partner with this ready-to-wear leader to design an exclusive version. Marketed until 1990 or 1991 depending on the different European markets, the Citroën AX K-Way stood as a pioneering example of smart co-branding long before modern automotive-fashion collaborations became widespread. Aesthetically, the car was instantly recognizable by its bodywork entirely dressed in the famous Blanc Meije AC088 white shade, which served as a clean backdrop to highlight exclusive graphic attributes. The most iconic detail of this bodywork undoubtedly lay in its lateral striping, representing a stylized giant zipper on the flanks, a direct nod to the famous foldable windbreaker jacket. Official K-Way logos proudly adorned the hood, the tailgate, and the wings depending on the destination countries. To complement this exterior look, the model received specific white hubcaps matching the body color, while body-colored bumpers and black window surrounds gave the package a significantly more premium look than traditional entry-level versions.
The interior extended this sportswear and textile atmosphere with remarkable attention to detail. The specific upholstery featured gray fabric enhanced with blue and red stripes, faithfully reproducing the color codes of the clothing brand, while the logo was featured directly on the headrests. In terms of equipment, the features varied significantly by country, illustrating the frequent national adaptations made by the manufacturer at the time. Notable features included the presence, either standard or optional depending on the geographical area, of a sunroof, radio preparation, a cigarette lighter, a vanity mirror, a second exterior door mirror, and a locking fuel cap.
Under the hood, the AX K-Way relied on proven powerplants adapted to local regulations. French and Belgian customers received the 954 cc engine developing 45 horsepower, mated to a four-speed manual gearbox for a top speed of 145 km/h. Dutch buyers benefited from a livelier version, powered by an 1124 cc engine with 55 horsepower, allowing a top speed of 158 km/h. Offered at its launch in France at an affordable price of 47,220 francs for the 3-door and 48,020 francs for the 5-door, this special edition would represent today, in updated values, a precise budget of approximately 13,835 € for the 3-door body and 14,000 € for the 5-door version. To top it all off, some examples were delivered with genuine matching K-Way jackets, definitively anchoring this model in the history of the most original collaborations of the industry at that time.

A highly sought-after AX: the youngtimer phenomenon
Within the long list of variations that marked the career of the city car, the AX K-Way now occupies a choice position among collectors. While Citroën produced many limited editions that became memorable, such as the Image, Spot, or Thalassa versions, this one stands out due to a unique combination of factors fueling its mythic dimension. Its look, typically anchored in the late 1980s, its avant-garde partnership combining fashion with the automobile, and its strong visual identity make it an essential historical milestone for the brand.
With a total production volume estimated at around 6,500 units, this series proved to be particularly exclusive on the scale of the model's mass production. This limited distribution explains the great current rarity of survivors on the collector market. In the era of the booming youngtimer phenomenon, finding an entirely original example, preserved from the ravages of time, and still possessing its intact lateral decorative stripes represents a true challenge for automotive heritage enthusiasts today.
This historic collaboration between Citroën and K-Way proved to be an undeniable marketing success, brilliantly demonstrating the viability of an alliance between two distinct consumer universes around a perfectly coherent product. The manufacturer's open-minded spirit found an ideal echo in the colorful practicality of the outdoor clothing specialist to win over an enthusiastic customer base. For enthusiasts wishing to admire this rare variation, a trip is highly recommended. The famous Citromuseum in Castellane houses a magnificent example preserved in exceptional condition. Visiting this memorial location constitutes a mandatory stop for all lovers of the brand traveling through the region during the summer period.
