Celebrating its 55th anniversary this year, the Citroën SM continues to amaze car enthusiasts. For the second year running, it has just been voted Germany's Best Classic Car of 2025 in the French Classics category. This prestigious award underlines the enduring appeal of this legendary model.
A prestigious award and a clear victory
The results of the annual competition organised by Motor Klassik magazine, a subsidiary of the renowned "auto, motor und sport" magazine, have been announced. The Citroën SM won with 47.8% of the votes, well ahead of its competitors in the "French Classics" category. More than 17,000 readers took part in the vote, confirming the public's fondness for this exceptional coupé.
Every year since 2012, collectors have been able to vote for the most iconic classics, as well as models likely to become the icons of tomorrow. The SM, which has already won this title in 2024, thus confirms its pre-eminent position among French historic cars.
The Citroën SM: a concentrate of innovation
First unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970, the Citroën SM has gone down in motoring history for its technological innovations. Designed by Robert Opron, it is still characterised by its fluid, futuristic lines. Its distinctive front end, with its six headlights encased in glass, gives it an instantly recognisable identity.
Technically, it was powered by a Maserati V6 engine, the result of Citroën's acquisition of the Italian manufacturer. Available in 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre versions, it gave the coupé a top speed of 220 km/h, making it the fastest front-wheel-drive car of its time.
Although only 12,920 units were produced between 1970 and 1975, the Citroën SM enjoyed growing popularity on the collector's market. Its reputation extended beyond its road performance: it was also a key figure in motorsport, notably winning the Rally of Morocco in 1971.
The SM also conquered the luxury sector with exclusive models such as the SM Mylord cabriolet and the SM Presidentielle, the latter reserved for the French government and used by François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac.
The Citroën SM's victory for the second year running confirms the enthusiasm it still inspires today. A symbol of daring and innovation, it embodies Citroën's pioneering spirit, capable of pushing the boundaries of automotive technology and design. Its success in the Motor Klassik Award 2025 confirms its timeless status, that of a car that continues to inspire and fascinate even 55 years after its launch.
