Automotive history is frequently shaped by an exceptional longevity that anchors specific models to certain regions of the world. As the first-generation Citroën Berlingo celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in Europe, a major historical milestone is being achieved across the Atlantic. In the Argentinian market, this pioneering multi-purpose vehicle has continuously served professionals far beyond the typical life cycles of the industry. The time has now come for this icon to take a well-deserved retirement. Stellantis is orchestrating a complete renewal by introducing a thoroughly modernized version, imported directly from Europe, ensuring local entrepreneurs receive a work tool tailored to modern requirements.
Citroën's strategic renewal in the Argentinian market
The light commercial vehicle landscape in Argentina is undergoing a profound transformation with the introduction of the new Citroën Berlingo. This launch takes place just weeks after the permanent end of local manufacturing for the first generation, closing a highly successful industrial chapter. By adopting the latest European stylistic and technical definition, the brand is doing much more than replacing an aging model; it is executing a major upmarket move for its entire vehicle lineup.
This modern van fits seamlessly into a refreshed product catalog, standing alongside the latest Citroën C4 and Citroën C5 Aircross. Developed on a modern Stellantis platform, the newcomer shares its robust technical foundations with its sibling, the Peugeot Partner, while maintaining Citroën's distinct aesthetic identity. The front fascia benefits from a redesigned, body-colored grille showcasing the brand's new visual signature, complemented by halogen headlights with integrated daytime running lights and protective side moldings that emphasize its robust and practical character.
An exclusive HDi engine formulated for local realities
To power this new commercial asset, engineers selected strategic technical options dictated by economic efficiency and fleet management needs. Unlike the European market, which prioritizes petrol powerplants or purely electric powertrains, Argentina maintains a strong focus on long-term cost efficiency. The new Berlingo skips petrol and electrification options altogether to capitalize on a time-tested, heavy-duty internal combustion engine.
Under the hood lies the reliable 1.6-liter Turbo HDi diesel engine with common rail direct injection. This powertrain generates 92 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and a generous torque of 230 Nm from as low as 1,750 rpm. This mechanical setup is fundamentally different from current European variants, which utilize a 1.5-liter BlueHDi engine delivering either 100 or 130 horsepower. Paired with a five-speed manual transmission and compliant with Euro 5 emission standards, this engine guarantees immediate responsiveness under full load and exceptional fuel economy, supported by a 53-liter fuel tank built for long interurban trips.
Premium habitability, load capacity, and safety standards
The new flagship of Citroën's commercial lineup stands out by delivering interior features designed to maximize daily productivity while guaranteeing excellent comfort. Facing local competitors that often remain basic, the Berlingo establishes new benchmarks thanks to its three-seat cabin, a rare configuration in this segment that greatly enhances teamwork. The driver benefits from optimized ergonomics, including a seat adjustable for height, tilt, and lumbar support, a multifunction steering wheel adjustable for both reach and rake, and electric power steering that feels exceptionally smooth in urban environments.
The cargo area has been engineered as a highly functional space, providing a usable volume of 3.9 m³ and a maximum payload capacity of 865 kg. Accessibility is enhanced by a right sliding side door and rear asymmetrical doors opening from 90° to 180°. The safety of both cargo and passengers is secured by a full bulkhead partition alongside partial protection for the floor and side panels.
In terms of technology and safety, the utility vehicle features a 10-inch central touchscreen compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors. Active and passive safety takes a massive leap forward with the inclusion of four-wheel disc brakes, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), ABS, tire pressure monitoring, and the "Coffee Break Alert" driver fatigue detection system.
The light commercial vehicle segment in Argentina is officially entering a new era of technological modernization. By replacing a historic first generation with this latest-generation European import, Citroën provides professionals with a business tool at the very top of its class. Available immediately across the national dealership network at a price of $38,860,000 (23 280€), the vehicle comes with attractive financing packages of up to 30 million pesos over 36 months at a 0% interest rate. Backed by the Stellantis Flexcare after-sales program, which offers fixed-price maintenance packages and a two-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, the new Citroën Berlingo holds all the necessary assets to strengthen the brand's market share and redefine business profitability standards.
