Citroën CX celebrates its 50th anniversary

La Citroën CX fête ses 50 ans

In 1974, Citroën launched the CX, a saloon designed to succeed the legendary DS and to bring a new wave of innovation to the automotive world. Almost 50 years later, the CX remains an indispensable icon in the history of the French automobile. Not only is it a technical masterpiece of its time, but in 2024 it continues to impress both Citroën enthusiasts and lovers of mechanical innovation.

The launch of the Citroën CX in 1974: a historic milestone

The Citroën CX was born on 26 August 1974, just two months after the announcement of the merger of the Citroën and Peugeot brands. Its launch took place in unique circumstances: "The 22 CXs used for testing made a remarkable return to Paris after a 3,400 km journey in six days called the 1974 Arctic Raid," said the Citroën press release. Launched on the market on 28 August, the CX quickly attracted attention at the Paris Motor Show in October 1974.

The model incorporated technical elements already associated with Citroën, such as front-wheel drive, hydro-pneumatic suspension and power-assisted braking, but it also featured a number of innovations that put it ahead of its time. These included a special engine layout to optimise weight distribution and improve road-holding, as well as numerous improvements in driving comfort and interior ergonomics.

Unique design and innovations that leave their mark

One of the CX's strong points is undoubtedly its resolutely futuristic aesthetics and aerodynamics, as evidenced by its very name, CX, which refers to the coefficient of drag. The interior is equally avant-garde. The lunula-shaped instrument panel on the dashboard offers an ergonomic layout that allows the driver to access the controls without taking his hands off the wheel.

The CX has evolved throughout its career: "Over the years, the CX has received innovations that, for the most part, have become standard features half a century later. These developments included the addition of interior mirrors, fog lights and an ABS braking system. Citroën was also one of the first to offer retractable seat belts in 1974.

The CX was quick to reap the rewards. In January 1975, it was awarded the prestigious Car of the Year 1975 trophy, beating models such as the Volkswagen Golf and the Audi 50. This recognition was due to its exceptional performance, in particular the famous Diravi power steering, which optimises road holding whatever the speed and weather conditions. The CX is the perfect synthesis of comfort, safety and technical innovation.

Iconic models and a wide range

The Citroën CX has given rise to a wide range of versions. The CX 2000, presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1974, is one of the most iconic, but the CX Prestige, launched in 1976, made a lasting impression by becoming the car of politicians. Thanks to its increased spaciousness and powerful engines, it won over the most important personalities, from the President of the Republic to ministers.

Other models such as the CX Diesel, the CX Break and the CX GTI Turbo also have their place in the Citroën legend. The Turbo versions in particular pushed the limits of performance, with the CX GTI Turbo 2 reaching a top speed of 223 km/h, an impressive figure for the time.

As well as being a car of luxury and technical innovation, the CX also excelled in competition. From 1975, it took part in iconic rallies such as the Rallye du Maroc or the famous Paris-Dakar. "The three CX 2200s finished the Abidjan-Nice rally-raid in 4th, 5th and 6th place after 9,246 km. This robustness and reliability made the CX a formidable machine on the tracks, where it competed with much more powerful models.

In 2024, the Citroën CX remains an automotive legend, both for fans of the brand and for mechanical enthusiasts. With its unique design, its avant-garde innovations and its long career, the CX has established itself as a benchmark in automotive history. Through its many evolutions and its sporting heritage, it remains a symbol of Citroën excellence.
