Citroën C5 Aircross: the new face of race direction on Italian roads

Citroën C5 Aircross

The international cycling landscape in Italy has taken on a new look this season. Citroën recently formalized a major strategic partnership with RCS Sport, the organizer of the most prestigious cycling events in Italy. This collaboration places the Citroën C5 Aircross in the spotlight as the official direction car for the main races on the calendar, including the legendary Giro d'Italia. After a successful debut at the Strade Bianche, the brand has just completed an intense week at Tirreno-Adriatico, before moving on to the great spring classics. This leading role allows the brand's flagship SUV to be observed in real-world conditions, closely following the efforts of the riders.

A successful baptism of fire between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas

The "Race of the Two Seas," a historic event that traditionally connects the two Italian coasts, served as the perfect demonstration ground for the Citroën C5 Aircross. From March 9 to 15, the world's best cyclists competed over a total distance of 1,165.5 km. From Lido di Camaiore to San Benedetto del Tronto, the convoy crossed Italy, facing diverse profiles: fast time trials, hilly stages, and demanding climbs in the heart of the Apennines. As a direction car, the C5 Aircross demonstrated exemplary versatility to keep pace with the athletes while ensuring race safety and logistics.

This distance of over 1,100 kilometers covered in one week perfectly symbolizes the requirements of modern mobility: endurance, efficiency, and continuity. A striking parallel can be drawn with the vehicle's technical capabilities. Indeed, the Citroën C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid 145 hp boasts a total range of up to 950 km (according to the WLTP mixed cycle). This technological performance allows for long journeys with total peace of mind, an essential quality for organizers who manage back-to-back stages without interruption. Just as cyclists manage their energy to cross mountain passes, Citroën’s hybrid system optimizes consumption to provide maximum driving smoothness, regardless of the terrain.

From Milan-Turin to the heights of the Basilica of Superga

As soon as Tirreno-Adriatico concluded, Citroën’s operations immediately shifted to another legendary event: Milan-Turin. Held on March 18, the oldest classic in the world featured a 174 km route from Rho to the Superga hill. In this one-day race, the pressure is different—more nervous, requiring increased responsiveness from the direction vehicles. The C5 Aircross once again led the way, confirming its ability to perform in dense urban centers as well as on the steep slopes leading to the Turin basilica.

For Citroën, this continuous presence on RCS Sport roads represents a major opportunity. Beyond the logistical aspect, it is an exceptional showcase to demonstrate the qualities of the new flagship in the range. The vehicle meets every requirement of the organization in terms of interior space and reliability. With its Progressive Hydraulic Cushions suspension and Advanced Comfort seats, the SUV transforms the interior into a true mobile lounge—a significant asset for race commissaires and officials who spend long hours in the convoy. Practicality is also key, with a generous trunk volume that remains identical across all engine types, allowing for the transport of the technical equipment necessary for the race.

Gaining momentum before the great Giro d'Italia

The partnership between Citroën and RCS Sport is now concretely underway, and the initial feedback from the field is very positive. In just a few weeks, the Citroën C5 Aircross has already proven to be much more than simple logistical support. It embodies the brand's stylistic renewal with its sharp lines and assertive stance on the road, evoking the agility of a high-level athlete. Its muscular silhouette, highlighted by wider tracks, does not fail to impress spectators and automotive technology enthusiasts on the Italian roadsides.

As the races continue, the SUV demonstrates its ability to adapt to the country's most varied terrains, from coastal plains to steep peaks. This "running-in" phase during the spring classics ideally prepares the ground for the next major events on the cycling calendar. By making itself accessible and visible to a wide and passionate audience, Citroën confirms its desire to be close to the real needs of users while supporting one of the most demanding sports in the world. The Italian adventure is just beginning, and the C5 Aircross already seems to have found its cruising speed.
