Citroën C5 Aircross: the 680 km long range version available to order

Citroën C5 Aircross

Electrification reaches a new milestone for Citroën

Citroën’s electrification strategy is accelerating with a major announcement for its flagship SUV. After successfully launching hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and the initial "Comfort Range" electric versions, Citroën is now completing the C5 Aircross lineup with a highly anticipated addition. This "Long Range" version represents the pinnacle of the model's technological offering, promising a mixed WLTP cycle range of 680 km, supported by a motor output increased to 230 horsepower (170 kW). This launch, with orders opening soon, marks a decisive step for the manufacturer as it seeks to blend its legendary ride comfort with the rigorous requirements of long-distance motorway travel.

A record eange for enhanced versatility

Previously available in an electric version offering a 520 km range, the Citroën C5 Aircross is taking a significant technological leap forward with the introduction of this new battery. By extending its driving range to 680 km, the French SUV directly addresses users who wish to travel long distances, particularly on highways, while significantly reducing the well-known "range anxiety" or the constant search for charging stations. To achieve such performance, the C5 Aircross is equipped with a Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery with a usable capacity of 97 kWh. This strategic component is produced at the ACC "Gigafactory" located in Douvrin, France, illustrating the brand's commitment to supporting local European manufacturing.

This high-performance battery is paired with a brand-new 230-horsepower electric motor, also manufactured in France within the STL-NIDEC joint venture in Trémery. This mechanical ensemble allows the C5 Aircross to provide a superior driving experience, where the available power ensures safe overtaking and exemplary fluidity of movement, staying true to the "magic carpet ride" spirit that Citroën is famous for. The final assembly of the vehicle remains at the historic Rennes plant, confirming the European industrial roots of this new flagship of the electric range.

High-performance charging solutions for long journeys

Given such a large battery capacity, the question of energy recovery time becomes vital for the end user. Citroën has therefore equipped the C5 Aircross Long Range with a high-performance charging architecture, accepting direct current (DC) charging power of up to 160 kW. This configuration allows for a charge from 20% to 80% in just 27 minutes at an ultra-fast charging station, a timeframe that perfectly matches a standard break during long trips. For daily use, the SUV comes standard with an 11 kW three-phase onboard charger. This allows for a full recharge in approximately 9 hours on a 7.4 kW single-phase Wallbox, or 6 hours and 30 minutes on an 11 kW three-phase infrastructure, ensuring the vehicle is ready for use every morning.

Innovation does not stop there, as the arrival of this Long Range version introduces an optional 22 kW three-phase bidirectional charger. This is particularly effective at public AC charging points, allowing the car to recover up to 160 km of range in just ten minutes. A full charge from 20% to 80% is completed in 3 hours and 15 minutes on a suitable Wallbox. Additionally, this option includes V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) functionality, a technology that transforms the car into a mobile energy source to power or recharge external electrical devices, such as a laptop, tools, or even an electric bike, further enhancing the vehicle's practicality for leisure or professional activities.

Comfort, technology, and equipment

To maximize energy efficiency and offer personalized comfort, the Citroën C5 Aircross features three distinct driving modes. Normal mode, activated by default, balances power and torque for serene daily driving. Eco mode prioritizes range by adjusting the performance of the air conditioning, heating, and engine responsiveness, while still allowing the driver to access full power via a "kick-down" in case of an emergency. Conversely, Sport mode unleashes the full 230 horsepower and instant torque for increased dynamism. To support these energy-saving efforts, the vehicle includes a regenerative braking system adjustable across three levels via steering wheel paddles, as well as an optional heat pump that optimizes cabin heating without sacrificing battery life.

The technological suite is completed by a built-in Trip Planner within the navigation system, which calculates the most efficient routes in real-time, taking into account traffic, elevation, and charger availability. This Long Range version represents the ultimate evolution of the C5 Aircross. Its powerful and muscular design remains sleek and fluid, integrating numerous aerodynamic solutions that are essential for electric efficiency. Faithful to the Citroën philosophy, the new C5 Aircross offers a true first-class travel experience, featuring generous interior space, an immense second row, and a trunk volume that remains identical regardless of the powertrain chosen. Drivers and passengers benefit from a high-tech cocoon combining Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspensions and Advanced Comfort seats.

Toward total peace of mind on the road?

In conclusion, this Long Range version allows the Citroën C5 Aircross to compete with the best standards on the market, offering a generous range coupled with fast-charging capabilities that eliminate the final barriers to electric adoption for families. It is interesting to note that the C5 Aircross is positioned very aggressively against its internal competition within the group, specifically the Peugeot e-3008. While they share identical technical characteristics, the Citroën matches the entry price of its cousin while being slightly more affordable in its high-end MAX trim compared to the GT version of the 3008. This strategy might just tip the scales in favor of Citroën's absolute comfort.
