Stellantis has three plants in Spain, located in Vigo, Zaragoza and Madrid. Of these, the Villaverde plant, near Madrid, stands out for its exclusive production of the Citroën C4 and C4 X for the world market. This makes it the third most productive plant in Spain, after those in Vigo and Zaragoza. Recently, the plant has undergone significant improvements, including the goal of becoming almost completely self-sufficient in electricity.
Production of the Citroën C4 and C4 X at Villaverde
In 2024, the Villaverde plant produced more than 92,000 vehicles, making it the third most productive plant in Spain after those in Vigo and Zaragoza. This production includes different engine variants:
(C4 and C4 X): These account for 88% of total production.
Electric versions (Ë-C4 and Ë-C4 X): These electric models account for the remaining 12% of production.
To support the production of electric models, the plant has opened a 2,000 m² battery assembly workshop with 16 workstations. The battery modules, supplied by the Chinese manufacturer CATL, are transported from China via the Suez Canal to the port of Valencia, where they are assembled in Villaverde. This workshop has an annual production capacity of 50,000 batteries, which will give the electric vehicles produced a range of 360 to 420 kilometres.
Self-production of electricity using solar panels
As well as producing electric vehicles, the Villaverde plant generates a significant proportion of the electricity needed to run the plant. A 60,056 m² photovoltaic system has been installed on the roof of the main production building. This solar plant is the largest in Madrid dedicated to industrial self-generation. It currently covers 54% of the plant's energy needs, with a target of 75% self-sufficiency by the end of the year. This initiative has reduced dependence on traditional energy sources, particularly gas, and reinforces the plant's commitment to environmental sustainability.
The Stellantis Villaverde plant plays a key role within the Group, not only for its production capacity, but also for its sustainability and innovation initiatives. Recent investments, such as the installation of the photovoltaic system and the opening of the battery assembly workshop, demonstrate the plant's commitment to adapting to changes in the automotive market. While Stellantis has not yet revealed its long-term plans for Villaverde, the recent introduction of the facelifted versions of the Citroën C4 and C4 X onto the production lines ensures short-term business continuity. These developments reflect a positive direction for the plant's future, pending official announcements on new projects or models to be produced at the site.
