Citroën C3: long delays for the hybrid version

Citroën C3 Hybrid

The new generation of Citroën C3 can already be described as a resounding success. Indeed, it made a notable entry into the Top 10 European sales in May, confirming its significant commercial potential. However, this launch has not been without its hurdles, marked by persistent production issues, particularly for the highly anticipated hybrid version. This situation consequently leads to extended delivery times, testing the patience of both customers and the dealer network. Despite these initial challenges, optimism remains high regarding the brand's ability to overcome these obstacles and meet a clearly established demand.

The C3 facing industrial challenges

The Citroën C3 is available with three distinct powertrains: petrol, electric, and hybrid. While the petrol and 100% electric versions boast more reasonable delivery times, the hybrid version is, on the other hand, experiencing significant delays. These difficulties are primarily attributed to suppliers struggling to provide the essential components inherent to this powertrain. L’Argus, a reliable source in the French automotive sector, has confirmed this persistent critical situation, reporting further slowdowns on several Stellantis group models equipped with the 1.2-liter MHEV (Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle) engine. Besides the Citroën C3, affected models also include the C3 Aircross and the Peugeot 208. For the C3 Aircross, a delay of about six months is expected, but for the mild-hybrid version, this delay can extend up to twelve months, which indicates the scale of the logistical challenges.

The main problem behind these delays, which extends beyond the C3 range, appears to be the electrified eDCT transmission. This six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, combined with a 29-horsepower electric motor, is a key component of the hybrid system. Although assembled at the Punch Powertrain PSA e-Transmissions plant in Metz-Trémery, France, its supply chain is experiencing significant delays, directly impacting overall production. The eDCT's history did not begin under the best auspices, as technical problems were encountered from the initial development phase, leading to structural modifications in 2024 and, consequently, a slowdown in production. In addition to the Citroën C3, Peugeot also had to postpone the launch of models such as the new e-3008 and e-5008 plug-in hybrids, highlighting the magnitude of the industrial challenge. Despite the efforts made by the Trnava plant, which prioritizes the 208, C3, and C3 Aircross models, the high number of orders has inevitably extended waiting times. The strong demand for the C3, and specifically for its hybrid powertrain, is significantly straining production capacity, creating a bottleneck that will take time to resolve.

The enthusiasm for the C3 Hybrid: a market phenomenon

The enthusiasm for hybrid vehicles continues unabated in Europe, where they account for nearly 45% of the market. For the Citroën C3, orders for the hybrid version are even significantly higher than this figure, demonstrating the considerable anticipation of customers, the distribution network, and the brand itself for this powertrain. Initial deliveries began a few weeks ago, allowing the network to offer test drives to customers. According to the first information we have gathered, the C3 hybrid proves to be particularly convincing, offering a smooth driving experience and commendable energy efficiency, thus confirming the expectations surrounding this version. This positive reception, despite the delays, is an excellent sign for the future and reinforces the belief that this powertrain is the right direction for Citroën.

However, given the significantly extended delivery times for the hybrid version, it may be a wise choice for those who want a car available sooner to consider the petrol or fully electric versions. These models continue to progress in production and are available with much more reasonable delivery times. The 100% electric or 100% petrol versions continue to be delivered within quick timeframes, offering a concrete alternative for customers eager to get behind the wheel of their new Citroën C3. For now, prioritizing these powertrains represents an effective solution to satisfy immediate demand.

The Citroën C3 stands out as an undeniable success, even though its hybrid version is not yet fully available. This gives an idea of the impressive score it will achieve when production can finally catch up with these very long delivery times. Production has started, and demand is so strong that it will take time to fully absorb it. Nevertheless, the C3 hybrid will soon be a more accessible reality, a reality that, according to our initial feedback, promises to be very satisfying in terms of performance and driving comfort. Citroën has a strong product in its hands, a vehicle that meets the expectations of a wide audience. Once the production challenges are overcome and supply chains optimized, the C3 is set to confirm its leading position in its segment and become a lasting pillar of the Citroën range.
