Citroën C3 and C3 Aircross: Stellantis’ new leaders in Germany

Citroën reports strong growth in Germany: a record first quarter 2026

Citroën is starting 2026 with remarkable momentum across Europe, particularly in one of the continent's most demanding markets: Germany. The first-quarter results show healthy growth for the French manufacturer, recording significantly higher sales volumes. This performance is supported by a massive electrification strategy that is paying off, allowing the brand to solidify its position within the Stellantis Group. Beyond the overall figures, it is Citroën’s breakthrough with private customers that is drawing attention. The duo consisting of the new Citroën C3 and C3 Aircross has now established itself as the group’s leading sales force for the German public, illustrating the relevance of the brand’s new product identity.

A complex german market with unique characteristics

To understand the scale of Citroën’s performance, one must analyze the specificities of the German automotive market. As Europe’s largest market by volume, Germany represents a major challenge for non-domestic manufacturers. Unlike the French market, where retail sales to private individuals traditionally hold a prominent position (often close to or exceeding 45%), the German market is structurally oriented toward corporate fleets and company cars.

In March 2026, the retail segment accounted for only 35.3% of the overall market, despite a 22% increase in this channel with 102,996 units. For the entire first quarter, the trend was confirmed with a retail weight of 38.6% for a total volume of 228,006 units. In this highly competitive environment where local brands historically dominate, succeeding in capturing the attention of private buyers is an extremely strong indicator of trust and desirability for a foreign brand. This is precisely where Citroën is managing to disrupt the established hierarchy.

March 2026: Citroën outperforms internal rivals

March 2026 marked a turning point for Citroën in Germany. The brand ranked 17th in the overall retail market standings, recording a growth of 27.4% with 2,136 registrations. This result is even more significant as Citroën surpassed its Stellantis Group "cousins": Peugeot took 18th place with 2,134 units (+23.2%), and Opel followed in 19th place with 1,783 units (+58.9%).

Citroën’s sales structure also highlights its uniqueness. While the overall German market only conducts a third of its business with private individuals, Citroën generates 43% of its total sales through this channel. In comparison, Opel only conducts 13% of its registrations via this route. Much of this success rests on the C3 and C3 Aircross pairing. With 1,075 units sold in March, this duo became the leading Stellantis passenger vehicle in Germany, with exactly 50% of its sales made to private households. It thus narrowly beat the Peugeot 208/2008 duo, which recorded 1,070 units.

Q1 2026: A period of solid confirmation

The excellent results in March were not isolated but confirmed a solid trend observed since the beginning of the year. For the entire first quarter of 2026, Citroën rose to 15th place in the German market with a total of 5,752 units, a spectacular growth of 28.4%. Once again, the brand outperformed Peugeot (17th with 5,403 units, +1.5%) and Opel (18th with 4,874 units, +38.4%).

Citroën’s virtuous reliance on private buyers was confirmed over the long term: 44.1% of the brand’s sales were intended for this audience, compared to 35% for Peugeot and only 14.5% for Opel. The C3/C3 Aircross duo confirmed its bestseller status by climbing to 17th place in the total market for the first quarter with 2,900 units. More than half of these sales (52.3%) were made by private customers, placing the model ahead of its direct competitors within Stellantis.

Finally, it is important to note the breakthrough of higher-segment models. The Citroën C4 and C4 X also performed notably with 131 units sold to private individuals (34.7% of their mix), surpassing established references such as the Peugeot 308 (121 units) and even the Opel Astra (109 units) in this specific channel.

A new era of conquest for Citroën

In conclusion, Citroën’s performance in the German retail market testifies to the success of its transformation. The new range is successfully attracting a German audience known for its high standards within Europe's most competitive market. Double-digit growth and a high share of retail sales (far exceeding the market average) prove that Citroën has found the right balance between innovation and affordability.

The success of the C3/C3 Aircross duo, as well as the strength of the C4 against its direct competitors, makes Citroën one of Stellantis’ leading forces in the German market. This positive dynamic bodes well for the remainder of 2026, confirming that the "Chevrons" brand now possesses all the assets needed to establish itself as a key player in European mobility.
