Citroën Berlingo Van XTR: when the commercial vehicle gets a taste for adventure

2025 Citroën Berlingo Van XTR

It seems the XTR nameplate is decidedly back in vogue at Citroën. I recently spoke about its noteworthy return on the new C3 Aircross in Brazil, and now, the name is making waves again on the Old Continent. Against all odds, it is the Citroën Berlingo Van that now wears the badge, through a brand-new and, to say the least, original XTR version, currently launched on the German market. This new special series does more than just add a badge; it offers a bold reinterpretation of the commercial van, equipping it with aesthetic attributes and features that bring it dangerously close to the world of passenger cars. It is an intriguing strategy that certainly deserves our full attention.

A rugged look that blurs the lines

The first thing that strikes you when you see this Berlingo Van XTR is its style. Citroën has made a bold and, in my opinion, very successful choice: grafting the front end of the Berlingo designed for families onto it. Gone is the simpler, more functional front bumper of the classic commercial van. Instead, we find a robust and more sculpted bumper, directly inspired by the passenger version, which integrates an aluminum-colored skid plate. This single change radically transforms the vehicle's perception. It gains in presence and character, moving away from its purely functional image to adopt the stance of a chic adventurer. This aesthetic link is so strong that it could almost cause some confusion: is this a vehicle for professionals or for families seeking an escape? Therein lies the genius of this version, which targets the craftsman or business owner who refuses to sacrifice style for practicality.

To complete this adventurous look, Citroën has paid close attention to the details. An exclusive "XTR" livery identifies this special series, complemented by a choice of three body colors: the classic Ice White, the elegant Steel Grey, or the original Libeccio Blue. The vehicle sits on handsome 16-inch alloy wheels that enhance its dynamic appearance, while glossy black exterior door handles add a touch of refinement. The intention is clear: to offer a commercial vehicle that doesn’t hide, a work partner that can also be an object of pride.

Equipment worthy of a sedan for demanding professionals

While the exterior is captivating, the interior and standard features confirm that this Berlingo Van XTR is not just a cosmetic exercise. Citroën designed this version as a turnkey solution for professionals who spend long hours on the road and demand top-tier comfort and technology. The standard equipment list is particularly generous. It includes the large 10-inch touchscreen of the "IVI HIGH" infotainment system, which significantly modernizes the dashboard. Crucially, the package also includes the "Dynamic Surround View" system, an extremely relevant technology for a panel van. It uses cameras to display a view of the rear and side environment, compensating for the absence of a central rearview mirror and effectively eliminating blind spots.

Comfort, a core part of the brand's DNA, is not overlooked. This special series features dual-zone automatic climate control and, most importantly, the renowned Citroën Advanced Comfort® seats. These seats, combined with the Extenso® cabin, offer welcome modularity: the side passenger seat can be folded down to extend the loading area for long objects, transforming the cabin into a veritable mobile office. To go even further, two packs complete the offer. The "Comfort Pack" adds a 6-way adjustable driver's seat, rubber floor mats, and a plastic protective floor for the cargo area. Meanwhile, the "Visibility Pack" bundles a rain and light sensor, a blind-spot assistant, front and rear parking sensors, and the Visiopark 180° system with a dynamic backup camera.

Under the hood, the choices are pragmatic and adapted to current needs, featuring a BlueHDi diesel engine with 102 hp (75 kW) paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox, offered at a starting price of €25,800 in Germany. A 100% electric version, the ë-Berlingo Van XTR, is also available, starting at €33,050, offering silent operation and access to low-emission zones.

Until now, the passenger Berlingo was the only vehicle in the European range to retain a touch of adventure with the XTR trim, available as an option on the top-tier MAX version for private customers. Now, the Berlingo Van joins it, not as a mere option, but as a full-fledged special series in Germany. This strong comeback of the XTR nameplate on two continents and on models as different as an urban SUV and a commercial van is certainly not a coincidence. It is legitimate to ask the question: could this badge, historically synonymous with leisure and off-the-beaten-path excursions, signify Citroën's return to the path of adventure? It may reflect a desire to reinject a spirit of freedom and versatility into its range, including for its professional customers. One thing is certain: this initiative brings a welcome breath of fresh air to the commercial vehicle market.
