Citroën Basalt: Latest information on the brand's new SUV coupé

Three quarter view of the rear of the Citroën Basalt

In June, Citroën will unveil the production version of the eagerly awaited Basalt, a coupé SUV designed to strengthen the brand's presence on the Indian and Latin American markets. This model is part of the C-Cubed strategic programme aimed at developing Citroën's international sales. Basalt will be launched after the start of the school year, particularly in India and Brazil, two key markets for the French brand.

Inspired design and efficient engines

The Citroën Basalt is a variation of the C3 Aircross, with a coupé rear that gives the vehicle harmonious lines and interesting proportions. The latest rumours suggest that under the bonnet, the Basalt will be offered in several versions with two types of engines. The entry-level models, Live and Feel, will be equipped with the naturally aspirated 1.0 Firefly engine, which produces 71 bhp with petrol and 75 bhp with ethanol, combined with a five-speed manual gearbox.

The higher versions, Feel Turbo and Shine Turbo, will benefit from the 1.0 Turbo Flex 200 engine, which develops 130 hp on ethanol and 125 hp on petrol, with a CVT automatic transmission simulating seven speeds.

Thoughtful design and equipment

Externally, the Citroën Basalt takes the front of the C3 Aircross, with identical headlights and a similar grille. However, the Live versions are distinguished by the absence of front fog lights, while the other models have them as standard. In addition, the Basalt Live is fitted with 16-inch steel wheels, while the Feel version has the same alloy wheels as the Shine version, but with uprated 205/60 R16 tyres.

The Shine versions are particularly well equipped with features such as digital climate control, push button start and electric rear window controls on the doors. In terms of safety, the Basalt doesn't differ much from the C3 Aircross, with front and side airbags, traction and stability control, ABS brakes with EBD, hill start assist and ISOFIX.

At the rear, the Basalt has a tailgate that integrates the rear window with a small spoiler and lights, in the spirit of the C3 Aircross, but thinner. Closely derived from the C3 Aircross, the Citroën Basalt would be based on the same wheelbase as its big brother, i.e. 2m67, and offer a significant loading volume, we are talking about 490 litres.

An ambitious international strategy

The launch of Basalt is part of a broader strategy by Citroën to increase its presence on international markets. The C-Cubed programme, of which Basalt is a part, is a key element in achieving this objective, with a particular focus on India and Brazil. These two countries are strategic for Citroën, which hopes to strengthen its position there with models adapted to local needs and competitive offers.

In addition to these two engines, a sports version of the Basalt with a 1.3 Turbo Flex engine of 185 bhp mated to a six-speed automatic transmission is also being considered. This version would feature specific styling elements such as a black-painted roof, full LED headlights and 17-inch wheels, as well as a dark interior with leather upholstery.

In conclusion, the Citroën Basalt is ready to become a major player on the Indian and Latin American markets thanks to its attractive design, efficient engines and well thought-out equipment. Citroën's strategy of diversifying its range and adapting to local markets seems promising and, if it is successful, could mean a bright future for the French brand internationally. The forthcoming presentation of the production version of the Basalt, 100% faithful to the Basalt Vision presented in March, will provide all the elements of this third vehicle, which is important for the development and success of the brand.
