After revisiting the Berlingo as a 2CV van and the Jumpy as a Type H, the Italian coachbuilder Caselani continues its collaboration with Citroën by tackling the Ami. Unveiled at the Rétromobile 2025 show, this new version, called "Type Ami", brings a retro touch to the electric micro-city car, paying homage to the emblematic models of the Chevrolet brand.

A new life for the Ami

Launched in 2020, the Citroën Ami quickly won over city dwellers looking for a practical and environmentally friendly urban mobility solution. With more than 65,000 units sold in four years, it has established itself as an accessible and innovative alternative in the automotive landscape. Its success is due to its compactness, ease of use and the fact that it can be driven by young people aged 14 and over with an AM licence.

Type Ami, the result of a collaboration between Caselani and the Citroën Style Centre headed by Pierre Leclercq, reinterprets the design of the Ami by drawing inspiration from the legendary Type H commercial vehicle produced between 1947 and 1981. The vehicle features an imposing double chevron grille, iconic round headlights and body panels with raised horizontal lines that recall the unmistakable style of the Type H. The dimensions remain unchanged, with a length of 2.41 m, preserving the agility and manoeuvrability appreciated in urban environments.

The fibreglass body panels are handcrafted in the Caselani workshops in Italy, ensuring a meticulous finish and harmonious integration with the Ami's existing structure. The refined design of the sheet metal wheels, the round mirrors and the minimalist rear lights complete this neo-retro transformation, giving the Ami a unique personality that will appeal to lovers of vintage design.

Technical specifications and cost of conversion

Behind its nostalgic appearance, the Type Ami retains the technical specifications of the original Ami. It is equipped with a 6 kW (8 hp) electric motor powered by a 5.5 kWh battery, offering a maximum range of 70 km and a top speed of 45 km/h. The kerb weight of 471 kg allows for controlled energy consumption and urban driving.

In terms of cost, there are several options available. For current Ami owners, Caselani offers a conversion kit for 5,000 Euros. This kit includes the fibreglass body panels, the necessary brackets and fixings, allowing installation without major modifications to the vehicle structure. In France, however, only the complete, ready-to-use version is available, priced at €13,900 and distributed by Méhari Evasion.

Extensive customisation

Caselani also offers customisation options for the Type Ami. Customers can choose from a palette of six solid colours and three metallic colours, or opt for custom colours in collaboration with the design team. This flexibility allows each customer to create a car that reflects their personality and aesthetic preferences.

The interior of the Type Ami remains faithful to the original, with a simple and functional layout. However, additional accessories can be added to enhance comfort or aesthetics, depending on the customer's preference. This modular approach makes it possible to adapt to individual needs while maintaining the practical spirit of the Ami.

Ami continues to surprise by reinventing itself where you least expect it. With this new body kit, it pays homage to the legendary Citroëns, in particular the Type H, by adopting an attractive neo-retro aesthetic. Interestingly, this transformation did not bring the Ami any closer to the 2CV, of which it was the direct heir. Nevertheless, the Ami is an attractive alternative for lovers of vintage design who wish to combine modernity and nostalgia with the advantages of urban electric mobility.
