Citroën in Formula E from 2026: The big return to competition is gaining momentum

A few weeks ago, I shared with you the growing rumors about a potential entry of Citroën into the world of Formula E. What was then an exciting hypothesis now appears to be solidifying into a concrete project. New, corroborating information suggests that the return of the brand with the chevrons to the highest level of motorsport is not only likely but imminent. By all accounts, Citroën is preparing to enter the all-electric single-seater world championship for the 2026 season, taking the place of another Stellantis group brand, Maserati. If officially confirmed, this news will mark a major turning point for Citroën and its global image.

A strategic game of musical chairs within Stellantis Motorsport

The Formula E paddock is buzzing with activity, and behind the scenes at the Stellantis group, a major reorganization seems to be underway. The primary piece of information we have is clear: Citroën would enter the championship in 2026, not by creating a new team, but by taking over the structure currently competing under the Maserati name. Although the Italian trident brand is theoretically under contract for another season, this move could be the direct result of a new strategic vision driven by the leadership of the Franco-Italian-American automotive giant. This return would end a hiatus for Citroën, which has been away from the global motorsport spotlight since its departure from the World Rally Championship (WRC) at the end of 2019. This was a discipline where the brand built its legend, securing eight manufacturer world titles and nine driver titles with the iconic duo of Loeb and Elena. Currently, its involvement is limited to supporting young talent in junior categories like WRC2 and WRC3, but the competitive DNA that has brought so much to the brand has never truly faded. Joining Formula E alongside DS Automobiles—another Stellantis brand and a pioneer in the discipline—would create a fascinating internal dynamic and significantly strengthen Stellantis's presence in this forward-looking championship.

Formula E: an ideal showcase for Citroën's electrification strategy

Should this return be confirmed, an official announcement is expected within the coming weeks. The choice of Formula E is far from random and fits perfectly with Citroën's current trajectory. The brand has undertaken a massive electrification of its vehicle range in recent years. With the launch of the highly anticipated ë-C3, designed to make electric mobility accessible, Citroën now offers a fully electric option for almost its entire model lineup, from passenger cars (Ami, ë-C4, ë-C4 X) to commercial vehicles (ë-Berlingo, ë-Jumpy, ë-Jumper). The C5 X is the sole exception. Therefore, committing to Formula E would provide an exceptional global communication platform to highlight this transition. The growing media exposure of the sport would allow Citroën to reach a new audience and reaffirm its technological expertise. Moreover, the spirit of Formula E, which rewards energy efficiency and intelligent power management as much as pure performance, resonates perfectly with Citroën's brand positioning. The brand does not pursue outright sportiness, but rather intelligent, comfortable, and efficient mobility solutions. This commitment would be the perfect way to prove that electric performance can also be synonymous with relevance and endurance—values at the very heart of Citroën's DNA.

In conclusion, all signs are pointing towards an official and exciting return to competition for Citroën. The move into Formula E in 2026, replacing Maserati, is a brilliant strategic maneuver by Stellantis. It would not only allow Citroën to regain visibility at the pinnacle of motorsport but also to position itself alongside its sister brand, DS Automobiles, in a championship of the future. Beyond the undeniable benefit to its brand image, this commitment would be a formidable catalyst for promoting one of the most comprehensive and accessible electric vehicle ranges on the market. It is a golden opportunity to demonstrate to the world that the innovation, efficiency, and comfort dear to Citroën are key assets in the race towards the mobility of tomorrow.
