Citroën ë-C3 Aircross: the short-range version discontinued

During the highly anticipated reveal of the new Citroën C3 Aircross, the brand logically extended its electrification strategy, which was first introduced with the ë-C3 hatchback. The B-segment SUV was announced with a 100% electric entry-level version, using the same motor and LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery pack as its smaller sibling for a range of around 300 km. However, aware of the different needs of SUV customers, Citroën quickly supplemented this offer with an "Extended Range" version promising over 400 km. Today, the brand is streamlining its lineup and making a pragmatic choice: the long-range version now becomes the sole electric proposition, a decision that reinforces the C3 Aircross's family-focused mission.

A strategic shift for a family-focused role

The first version announced, sometimes called the "comfort range" with its 300 km, was mirrored from the ë-C3 and aimed to secure a rock-bottom entry price. However, the C3 Aircross is positioned differently than a simple city car. This compact SUV, which is available with 5 or even 7 seats (a rarity in this segment), is designed to be the main, or even the only, vehicle for a household.

In this context, a 300 km (WLTP) range can be a psychological and practical constraint for families who need to manage daily commutes, grocery runs, school activities, and, on weekends, local getaways or family visits. The 300 km range, perfectly adequate for the urban-focused ë-C3, was slightly restrictive for a vehicle built for greater versatility.

Citroën has therefore decided to simplify its lineup by keeping only the most versatile version: the one equipped with the larger battery, offering over 400 km (approx. 249 miles) of range (official homologation pending). This strategic move eliminates "range anxiety" and puts the ë-C3 Aircross on equal footing with competitors who widely promote this new range standard. It is a choice that prioritizes the real-world use of its customers over a headline-grabbing entry price. The SUV thus gains credibility and strengthens its competitiveness in a highly contested market.


Aggressive pricing at the heart of the market

The removal of the 300 km range version does not mean a price increase. In fact, the Citroën ë-C3 Aircross, with its 400 km range battery, continues to offer extremely competitive prices. The electric SUV is now available from €29,400 for the entry-level 'You' trim. The range is completed by the "Plus" and "Max" trims, with the latter priced at €33,600.


These prices put the ë-C3 Aircross in a strong position against its direct rivals. A comparison with its technical cousin, the Peugeot e-2008, is revealing. Despite having a similar range of around 400 km, the Peugeot SUV is up to €5,000 more expensive. Therefore, the ë-C3 Aircross offers an alternative that prioritises interior space (especially in the rear seats) and overall comfort, while being significantly more affordable.


Citroën's competitiveness is also evident in its Lease with Option to Purchase (LOA) offers. The ë-C3 Aircross "Plus" trim (mid-range) is available from €330 per month. For comparison, the MG5 EV, which is often praised for offering good value for money, is available from €338 per month for the "Comfort" trim.


A 'Made in Europe' choice with fast charging.

As well as offering good value for money and plenty of space, the ë-C3 Aircross has another major advantage: it is manufactured in Europe. Produced at the Stellantis plant in Trnava, Slovakia, it carries the 'Made in Europe' label. This is an increasingly important selling point for consumers and guarantees eligibility for future eco-bonuses, which could become more stringent regarding vehicle origin. This is especially the case in France, where the engine is manufactured.


This European manufacturing sets it apart from competitors like MG, whose production is based in China. In a context of growing environmental awareness and trade tensions regarding transportation, this "local" argument could be the deciding factor.


Finally, the 400 km range version comes with charging specifications that are tailored to its versatility. It accepts DC fast charging of up to 100 kW, enabling it to charge from 20% to 80% in under 30 minutes.

A clear strategy to win over families

By adapting its electric offer for the new C3 Aircross, Citroën is demonstrating pragmatism and a keen understanding of the market. Abandoning the 300 km version in exclusive favor of the 400 km extended range is a strong strategic choice. It solidifies the ë-C3 Aircross's role as a primary family vehicle, one that can handle the stress of daily life and holiday departures with ease.

Still remarkably affordable, this 400 km ë-C3 Aircross stands as a powerful contender. It challenges the Peugeot e-2008 by offering more space, signature Citroën comfort, and a much friendlier price tag. It competes with MG on price while adding the value of an SUV design, the 7-seat option, and the "Made in Europe" advantage. This is a rational and appealing proposition that could very well shake up the electric B-SUV segment.
