Twenty years after this historic presentation, this styling and technological exercise retains a striking modernity and an intact power of fascination among automotive enthusiasts. Both an aesthetic manifesto and a true rolling laboratory, the C-Métisse embodies an era of boundless creativity for the French manufacturer. This article offers a detailed look back at this exceptional concept car, which deeply marked minds and continues to illustrate the brand's capacity for innovation.

The ambitions of the C-Métisse: blending automotive passion with technological reason

The presentation of a concept car by a major manufacturer is never a trivial act, especially when it takes place in Paris, on the brand's home turf. With the C-Métisse, Citroën pursued several crucial strategic objectives under the design direction of Jean-Pierre Ploué. The primary goal was to demonstrate the brand's stylistic expertise in high-end design by exploring a completely new vision of Grand Tourisme. The aim was to prove that a luxury vehicle could perfectly combine pure driving pleasure with first-class onboard comfort.

Alongside these aesthetic considerations, this premium coupé served as a technological showcase to highlight PSA's advanced research into diesel hybridization. In 2006, the automotive industry was actively seeking concrete solutions to reduce the environmental footprint of vehicles without sacrificing driving dynamics. Citroën wanted to demonstrate that a high-performance car could also be eco-responsible by drastically reducing its fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. This project positioned itself as the perfect marriage between automotive passion and environmental reason..

An exceptional silhouette at the crossroads of styles: absolute stylistic audacity

At first glance, the C-Métisse delivers a major visual shock thanks to its extraordinary proportions, making it instantly recognizable. Measuring 4.74 meters long and 2.00 meters wide, it surprises above all with its extremely low height of just 1.24 meters. Its unique silhouette sits at the crossroads of several automotive segments, cleverly blending the genes of a sports coupé, a status sedan, and a shooting brake. This bodywork, magnified by a deep burgundy red paint and numerous chrome details, gives the vehicle an exclusive personality and immense character.

The overall architecture strictly respects Citroën's historical design DNA. The very long front hood, the generous wheelbase of 3.00 meters, the extremely short rear overhang, and the muscular wings give the visual impression of a car ready to pounce. This sensuality of lines is complemented by a spectacular door-opening mechanism. The front doors open upward in a butterfly fashion, while the rear doors utilize a similar but reversed helical path. This impressive visual ballet is highly functional: it partially clears the roofline, solving the major accessibility challenge inherent to extremely low vehicles.


The C-Métisse interior: an aeronautical cockpit crafted with noble materials

The interior space of the C-Métisse was crafted with the same level of detail as its exterior bodywork. The theatrical opening of the doors reveals a minimalist cabin where serenity rules, structured around four independent seats. The contrast is striking between the ultra-technological cockpit dedicated to the driver and the passenger area, upholstered in high-end white leather and enhanced by wood inserts and brushed aluminum elements. Rear headroom and legroom are remarkable for the segment, offering knee room comparable to limousine standards thanks to the optimal use of the 3-meter wheelbase.

The driver's station draws direct inspiration from the world of aviation for its controls. The driver faces a fixed-hub steering wheel—a true Citroën ergonomic signature of that era—which groups core driving aids and comfort functions to eliminate unnecessary movement. Aluminum gearshift paddles are positioned right behind the wheel, while the ignition and starter buttons are located on the roof console, evoking the atmosphere of a fighter jet.

Among the major innovations, the concept introduced an automatic driving position adjustment system determined by the driver's eye level, optimizing ergonomics and visibility via the head-up display. Finally, the center console features a design separated by five distinct claws housing the aluminum gear selector and extends into the cabin via three luminous rods designed to visually inform occupants of the active hybrid propulsion mode.


A cutting-edge mechanical laboratory: integrated in-wheel diesel hybridization

Underneath its carbon fiber bodywork, the C-Métisse houses a highly original hybrid mechanical architecture for 2006. The internal combustion element is handled by a 2.7-liter V6 HDi diesel engine producing 208 horsepower (150 kW), paired with a six-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. The breakthrough innovation lies in the electrification of the rear axle, featuring two independent electric motors integrated directly into each of the rear wheels. Developing around 20 horsepower each, they can deliver an impressive torque of up to 400 Nm per wheel.

This unique technical configuration delivers an effective all-wheel drive system without requiring a heavy and bulky mechanical driveshaft between the two axles. Energy flow management is entirely automated by the central control system, which activates the electric motors during hard acceleration via the "boost" function or when ESP sensors detect low-grip road conditions.

By extensively utilizing carbon fiber for the body and the front subframe, engineers kept the total weight to a contained 1,400 kg, including batteries. Combined with an optimized aerodynamic drag coefficient (Cx) of 0.30—achieved through a flat underbody, front air scoops, retractable rear spoilers, and a fixed rear diffuser—the concept delivers top-tier performance figures:

  • 0 to 100 km/h acceleration achieved in just 6.2 seconds.

  • Standing 1,000 meters covered in 25.4 seconds.

  • A top speed of 250 km/h.

  • A controlled average fuel consumption of 6.5 l/100 km on the combined cycle.

The prototype also features a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mode, offering an electric range of 3 kilometers at a steady speed of 30 km/h, perfect for quiet urban driving.


Ultimately, the Citroën C-Métisse represented a remarkable synthesis of the brand's direction in the mid-2000s. Through this project, the manufacturer demonstrated its capacity to explore new automotive silhouettes, optimize aerodynamics, and maximize energy efficiency without ever compromising premium features or driving pleasure. With its non-conformist spirit and bold technical choices, the C-Métisse follows the lineage of the iconic grand tourers that forged the brand's legend, evoking the spirit of the mythical Citroën SM, XM, and DS. Although it never made it to production, this design study heavily influenced later models and laid the technical foundation for the HYbrid4 all-wheel-drive hybrid system commercialized a few years later by the PSA Group. Unique and precious, it is preserved today within the Citroën Heritage collection, serving as a timeless witness to a period of extraordinary creativity.
