April 2023 review - ITALY car market: Citroën in trouble

With an increase of 29.2% to 97,365 units sold in April, the Italian car market, like all the world's markets, is confirming its recovery following an improvement on the front of the shortage of components. Electric vehicles are struggling to make inroads in Italy, representing only 3.1% of the market in April, down from March.

In this context, sales of the

  • ALFA ROMÉO rose by 155.09% to 2,380 units, giving it a market share of 1.89%.

  • CITROËN, down 18.88% to 3,029 units for a market share of 2.41%.

  • DS were up 20% to 630 units for a market share of 0.5%.

  • FIAT up 5.16% to 15,359 units for a market share of 12.21%.

  • JEEP were up 45.74% to 6,025 units for a market share of 4.79%.

  • LANCIA were up 35.65% to 3,721 units for a market share of 2.96%.

  • MASERATI 324 units

  • OPEL are up 17.12% to 4,070 units for a market share of 3.24%.

  • PEUGEOT are up 74.70% to 7,622 units for a market share of 6.06%.

In total, Stellantis sales rose by 24.68% to 43,160 units, giving it a market share of 34.31%, making it the very large leader ahead of the Volkswagen Group (22,893 units for a market share of 18.20%). It is therefore a sharp fall for Citroën on the Italian market in April, a fall which is explained by the stoppage of production at the Trnava plant where the C3 is produced, the factory having been closed for 15 days to prepare for the arrival of the future C3.

This loss of production of the C3 is immediately noticeable as sales of Citroën's small saloon literally collapsed in April with only 833 units sold, placing the C3 10th in its segment and 46th in terms of sales, whereas it is usually in the top 10. This explains Citroën's decline, as the C3 is by far the best-selling brand. In April, the C3 Aircross was the best-selling Citroën with 1,071 units. Note the good performance of the C4, which sold 448 units, putting it in 7th place in its segment, ahead of the Peugeot 308 and the leading French car.
